I'M NOT ONE

the big kids used to push me in the schoolyard
they'd steal my lunch before i took a bite
at seven my long hair attracted bullies
so daddy said he'd teach me how to fight
cause inside every boy is the beginnings of a man
learning when to walk away and when to take a stand

i'm not one to cut and run
   when things are gettin' tough
   people say judgement day
   will be here soon enough
mostly we can pick and choose
   when we need to fight
there are some you're gonna lose
   even when you're right
some folks look for trouble like it's fun
   i'm not one.

we'll be married seven years, october
there are times when we both cross that line
i've punched a couple walls, she broke some dishes
leavin' her has even crossed my mind
'cause inside every grown-up man there's still a little child
ya gotta put him in his place once in every while

   i'm not one....

some folks reach a time when they'll regret the things they've done
i'm not one.

You know the drill (most of ya, anyway....)

Floyd,

This is excellent song! I love the tracks mix and the chorus is awesome. Great melody.

Your usual strong vocal and exceptional sense of timing is on full display here.

Greatness all around!

I guess I am one of those late to the game who want to know what the drill is.

Until this point I did not know there was one.

Do I listen to the song and comment? What do I say?

Is there a test afterwards??

Well, I listened to it and it sounded really nice, with what I would call that signature Floyd sound, a very familiar one.

Do I go outside and wait on the sidewalk now until the hall monitor lets me back in?

But seriously, I enjoyed it!

smile

Hope I passed!!!!

Floyd,
terrific narrative, excellent melody and the arrangement is spot on.
The vocal? They're your voice which is always a great start. This is no exception...really well sung & emoted.

Floyd, your lyrics are always so much better than the norm. Man, you write about many things you are NOT, but the things you ARE are so much more remarkable. I love how you take it from the kid to the grown-up and maintain your code. The melody makes the flow seamlessly, and the variation between chorus and verse are perfect learning tools for struggling songwriters. You always manage a clever write with a hook that makes the listener return for more. Yeah, you're one of those. Thanks for all.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Hi Floyd ...

It's hard to go wrong when writing with Bill. Besides being an excellent songwriter, he's a heck of a nice guy.

Terrific song and so well produced and delivered. In addition to your great vocals and arrangements, I particularly enjoyed the mandolin on the left playing perfectly with the guitar on the right. Great backing tracks.

As always, pure excellence. Best to you & yours ...

Alan

Thanks, Bob. Having begun my "songwriting journey" (50+ years ago) concentrating on lyric...it is always gratifying for someone to make note of the melody - much appreciated...

An up-beat song from Storyteller Floyd (hope you like the nickname, because that's what they really should call you, Storyteller Floyd ... it says so much, I feel, about your musical qualities, in one word)!

Your usual high standard. Perfect lyrics, that lifeworn voice that seems like it's been through everything and then some, and here you show you can do an up-beat, "cheerful-sounding" song, without sacrificing ANY of your qualities. Did I mention you can tell stories like very, very few ever can or do? Well, if I haven't, here it is. And, if I have, I say it again smile

Bravo.

Typically excellent fj song. Toe-tapping country goodness.

Nice write by Bill and you. Love your singing.

The mandolin is a stand-out, everything sparkles in the clean mix... My compliments to the bass player!

The electric guitar gives the chorus a build with some lovely arpeggios, and importantly the band sounds like a band.

It's got that "over too soon" sound that makes me want to play it again.

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

Another winner from Floyd and company.
Great lyrics with a very catchy chorus.
You always pick the perfect banding tracks on all of your songs.
As usual outstanding vocal.

Thanks, Alan. Bill is a top-quality lyric guy. For someone who doesn't do any music (I don't know if he plays an instrument or not - and we wrote a couple dozen together) his sense of prosody is highly developed. That "sense" of what works in a "radio song" (i.e. something pitch-able in Nashville) is a skill that only a small percentage of people truly understand...

Floyd...great song...love the band...give me that acoustic pickin' 24/7! your harmonies are super in this one... however...I think you are one...one of the best writers of solid country and Americana tunes around these parts...your songs never disappoint and are always crafted with a listener friendly mastery! thanks for giving the rest of us a target to shoot for in quality writing and production...again...a stellar mid-tempo country song!

User Tip: How to add drum fills without changing any other tracks

MarioD has shared some great advice when it comes to adding drum fills without changing any other tracks in your song:

There have been a number of questions asking how to add drum fills without changing any other tracks in a song. This is especially important if one is holding a chord for a few measures and wants to add a drum fill prior to the next chord. The following is how to accomplish that:

1-get the instruments/tracks to play like you want but don't worry about the drums for now.
2-generate the song.
3-freeze all tracks
4-unfreeze the drum track
5-add your fills where you want them
6-generated the song again - note this will only generate the drum track and not the frozen tracks
7- when you get the drums like you want them freeze the track
