See You Down The Road on Soundcloud
See You Down The Road on YouTube

Release day today for this one, and I forgot. I just upload these songs to the streaming services with the hope that it will make me stop mixing them. This song was created after reading The Scenic Route: A Short Story by Christina Baker Kline.  It's dedicated to that nomadic gene in all of us. The best part of the song is that Janice Merritt sang along.

Key=C , Tempo 101, Length (m:s)=3:48

See You Down The Road

Someone always says you must go crazy in your van life.
Well, it sure beats 9 to 5. You feel much more alive on the road.
Whenever you pull into another camping site there's a friend there
who will lend a helping hand because we understand there's a code.

I'll see you down the road where all of life's dust we'll unload.
Don't worry if I am late. I'll see you down the road.

Driving down the road the signpost up ahead says there's happiness.
There's adventure and intrique.
There's air you actually breathe, and your friends.
When finally you arrive to your new space for a time
you are back with friends.
You will see a welcome sign hanging somewhere
all the time without end.

I'll see you down the road where we can cultivate our souls.
You know I'll wait for you there. I'll see you down the road.

I'll see you down the road we'll drink to our lives yet untold.
I'll see you down the road. I'll see you down the road.

Reminds me of the time when I was traveling in the south of France, with an old car, a tent and lots of fun.
Your song brings back a lot of memories. Thanks for that smile[Linked Image - Only viewable when logged in]

Janice is the perfect harmony partner for you, your voices go very well together.
Great song!

As you probably know, I am a part time nomad. I certainly relate to the lyrics. I like the choice of real tracks. Campfire style. Whoever thought of the delayed harmony, it was a perfect idea and perfectly executed by Janice. I just downloaded the short story. Good thing it’s short. My plate is full these days. I really loved everything about it, Tom

Hey Marty & Janice,

Love it! I can relate so easily. I've been a traveler all my life. I've been to 41 countries and all but two states (Oregon & Hawaii). The most interesting place I've been is around the bend I've not yet traveled.

Nice pieces in the band - everything fits so nicely.

And how can you not think of Janice's voice without searching for superlatives that don't yet exist? As Tom mentioned, the delayed harmony is just so danged good!

You're turning into a music machine, Marty. I'll drop my quarter in the slot any time. Keep 'em coming.

Alan

Marty, you and Janice really crushed this one! Definitely a great singalong opportunity. Loved the video, which I didn't see the credits for. It's pretty amazing. Loved the band, too. Well, except for that pesky harmonica that never takes a break. But I've been accused of that as a guitarist, so I get it. Ha! Fantastic tune, a keeper!

Tom, you are one guy I definitely thought of when writing this. You always write such good songs about the folks you meet on your travels. Glad you downloaded the story. I think you're in it somewhere.

Your books were also an inspiration for this one, Alan. This is the kind of song that can have different verses at different fires. Yours would sing about Dot and the half-pint. "Superlatives that don't yet exist"is a great way to describe Janice. The idea was to use only "baby chords" so any strummer at any campfire could easily play it without moving from the first postition. It's just another kumbaya song. The delayed harmony started as a round (also popular at campsites), but morphed into the sing-along. Thank you, Alan.

If I've got a nomadic gene, it's long laid dormant, and I'd like to keep it that way. wink

But that in no way stopped me from enjoying the song.

Good song - easy going vocals, with lovely harmonies with Janice, and the strummed guitar and harmonica are a perfect choice here.

Does posting a song actually stop you mixing the song? I'm constantly tinkering with songs I released some time ago, especially since I can re-do synthetic vocals, or correct lyrics that didn't quite work. laugh

Vocal control, you say. Never heard of it. Is that some kind of ProTools thing?

What a cool melody to the song Marty. Janice's harmonies were a perfect compliment to the song. Reminded my of a song from early 70's. Really cool vibe. Well done..

Love a travelling song, Marty.
You and Janice sound great together. The delayed harmony is inspired. And I could even play this one myself (baby chords)!

Leon

Van life means something slightly different over here at the moment...housing crisis, people with great jobs living in vans that move a few km each week to do the rounds of parking/camping sites close enough to commute from.
This is a lovely song that reminds me of a pair of friends I have that have spent the last two years doing the "Grey Nomad" thing of travelling around Australia and seeing the sights while healthy & early in retirement.
Lovely song, wonderful feel, Janice is a wonder addition as expected. A band that serves the song - all in all a fabulous thing.

Cheers

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

Thanks so much, Ron. The vid credits are mentioned right at the beginning and end, although both sites say attribution is not necessary. HA! The pesky harmonica would've been so much more pesky if Dave Bell hadn't recently taught me about sidechain ducking. Still, every campfire (or jam session for that matter) has someone who carries an harmonica in his (girls aren't usuaslly that annoying) pocket, as if that one harp will be right for any key. Fortunately this one is in C and they each had F harps.

Thanks, Dave, and thanks for that sidechain ducking advice --much needed in this song. Janice makes everyone sound better, and Bud makes it so easy by sending the perfect stem.

Oh, I'm definitely with ya on that aging nomadic gene, David, but you know how genetics works. Well, I say posting stops me from continuing to mix, but I'm just trying to convince myself. Guess I'm with ya on that one too.

Marty...this is an Americana masterpiece...love the band (the acoustic and harmonica...yes) and the melody (especially the chorus) is as good as it gets...it's got that folky/country/60' sound...and the duet parts with Janice are perfecto! man in my mind you hit a homer with this little number...well done!

BTW: Two years back my brother and I took his RV and went to 13 states...I-80 from Illinois to San Fransico and then the northern trail back home through Oregon and Washington and all points in between...your song reminded me of the unforgettable time we had traveling this magnificent country...thanks!
