All of my saffire inputs and outputs appear in realband asio driver inputs and outputs. I select SPDIF input, open the vu meter to set my recording level and get a flashing realband message to enable my record input. Here is my problem, windows 7 record mixer only shows my saffire mic input and has set this as the default. My web searching came up with one repeated solution. Right click on an empty area in the win 7 record window and put checkmarks in the boxes labled "show disabled devices" and "show disconnected devices." This does nothing for me. Also, the configure, set default, properties, and apply boxes in this window are greyed out. Device manager shows my device working properly. Saffire playback is fine. I have disabled onboard realtek sound in the bios. Can someone help me to get win 7 to show all of my inputs in the record mixer window? Thanks..Bobby

Inside RB, if you go to Options-Preferences-Audio tab-drivers button

Is the saffire listed in the drivers section?

Yes it is. Actually, before I disabled the onboard realtek sound, the win. mixer only showed the realtek mic input as well. It should have also displayed a line input with the realtek, but it didn't. I don't believe this is a realband problem, but something to do with win 7. I posted here because of the great help and support this forum provides. Bobby

Strange that RB would find it if Windows can't. Doesn't seem right, as RB gets the report from the OS as to the available ports.

Is it just the spdif that does it? Are there other Saffire inputs to try?

Are you expecting the Saffire to use the Windows Sound Mixer Applet?

I don't know the Saffire, but it would be odd if a high quality aftermarket Firewire sound device used that bit of software to control it. Typically there is *another* software mixer that installs with the device's drivers and software. Often it puts a new icon in the taskbar for access.

Maybe that's the problem...

If the saffaire is attached thru Firewire, then you would not use the spdif input as that is digital and the other is not.

My guitar is plugged into a Vamp pro and I am using the spidif output into the saffire spdif input. I could have substituted "line input" for "spdif input" in my qeuery. To help clarify my problem, realband needs me to set the record input level. The only place I would have this ( as far as I know ) is the windows 7 record mixer, which again only shows my mic input on my saffire pro. My old computer with a creative audigy card did have it's own mixer applet. The saffire mix control software app. is for monitoring and routing only. The only gain control is on the saffire hardware and this is for mic & line inputs 1 & 2 only. I have been searching the web and found that it might be a driver issue.....Just got a second reply from focusrite....they have released a new driver. The blurb with it now says "fully compatible with new operating systems, win7 + mac. Funny, one of the faqs on there answer base, before the release of this driver, is about how the saffire works with win 7 64 bit. This is what I checked before I purchased the unit. I will try the new drivers this weekend. Thanks for your help. Will let you know....Bobby

i know spdif is all the rage with many folks , but given electronics design these days unless theres a screw up many people record just fine useing line inputs.
the normal consumer after the songs done only cares bout the overall song.
if the saffire control panel dont let you control the level going into RB..
(which surprises me given the cost of the unit)...then just set the output volume in
the behr unit feeding the saffire.

S/PDIF yields *absolutely no noise floor* manning.

When using it with something like a guitar amp/speaker cab/effects simulator, it can really make a difference...

On top of that, use of the digital S/PDIF connect avoids passing your already digitized signal through a needless D-A and then the A-D in the sound device, which, as you should know, *changes* the bitstream. Usually for the worse. It also opens the door to needless clocking jitter problems.

Another good thing about using S/PDIF connect when available, is that it completely bypasses any possibility of the dreaded AC Ground Loop nasties of buzz, hiss, etc.

Here in my little home studio, any device that has S/PDIF output, that's the output of choice, every time. In my case that includes certain MIDI synths as well.

ok spdif lovers..lol.
record anything..split the signal...
one going to recording daw via spdif and one via line input
thru decent A>>D.
so you have 2 recorded files.
now drag off the street 5 "normal consumers" ,
and ask em if they hear a difference.
lol.
I'M NOT ARGUING spdif is TECHNICALLY BETTER.
i'm just suggesting looking at the bigger scheme of things vis the consumer.
crikey , i used to use a 2 inch multitrak tape machine with a snr of -55db !!
all i'm suggesting is that some good folks worry too much bout certain things.
and its not the end of the world if spdif aint available.

on another forum somewhere someone compared a daft SB card recording wise
to top line convertors. only a few could tell the diff.
now i wouldnt use a SB card mates if i was given one.
all i'm suggesting is some people over worry bout this stuff.
hits were made years back going into line inputs on 8 trak adat digital tape machines for example.
sure use spdif if ya got it...but its not the end of the world if ya dont imho.

I changed the firewire driver back to host compliant, installed ver 2.0 driver and still have the same problem. My DAW(PG music Realband) shows all of the saffire asio inputs and outputs. When I select an input my DAW gives me a message, " in the windows control panel sound that appears, select(right click enable) the source(s) to record from", then automaticaly opens the windows 7 record applet. Once again, only the mic appears. I cannot record from any other input, because they won't show in the win 7 record window. I need all the inputs to show in this window, so I can access the record fader to set levels. Is this a saffire pro 24 dsp driver issue? Iam not tech enough to go any further. Can you help me with an explanation please? I hope I haven't purchased an expensive paper weight. Thanks, waiting for your reply.

Above is a copy of my third email to focusrite support. Manning1, thanks for your help. Iam not looking for a workaround. I expect the product to work as advertised. Can someone on this forum confirm that this is a driver issue, or has tech expertise to help me out? Thanks...Bobby

It does sound like a driver issue. Can the drivers be run in compatibility mode to see if it is a 64 bit issue?

A search shows quite a few with Win 7 problems ..

Have you tried Saffires suggestions and new drivers?

I found this-
Windows 7 Users:

If you were previously using a Saffire on Windows 7 utilising the Windows Legacy FireWire driver, you will need to update your Windows FireWire driver before installing this update. For more information on this, please visit the Focusrite Answerbase.

Yeah!and now some studios are going back (and loving it )to analogue for that"warm" sound that they just dont get with digital. Im no tech expert by any stretch of the imagination but the Beatles Sgt Pepper album done on 8 track should say it all as far as Im concerned. But for me software like biab is a Godsend and though I loved my reel to reel Revox the cutting and pasting and winding back did my head in! Frankie

Thanks Rharv. I have already installed their newest ver.2.0 driver. Heard from focusrite tech support again and they say they think it might be a conflict with my software(realband). Send us a screen shot of the window that opens in realband when you select a recording input. I fired of another email once again explaining that realband opens the win7 mixer applet.I could leave realband closed, open up the win7 mixer applet and not see any of the pro24dsp's inputs except for the mic. The conflict appears to be with the pro24dsp and windows 7. I would think a successful company like focusrite would be more forthcoming if there is a problem. The three responses I have received so far make me feel as if they haven't even read my replies. ...Bobby

I hate it when you get the generic response like they haven't even read it.

If you look in the control panel do you see any entries for the Saffire?
How about in 'Programs'?

Just trying to help you find the missing mixer!
It may be they are stalling until new drivers are released, or they may just be overwhelmed at this point..

Wishing you luck.

I see you did get the new drivers, but did you follow the instructions for Win7 I linked to? Seems there is a little more to do than install the drivers (possibly)..

Could be a Firewire compatibility issue, we have seen that more than once

Yes Rharv, I followed focusrites instructions to the letter. I reverted back to host compliant firewire driver( was running on legacy), and installed the new ver2.0 driver. My saffire shows as the default audio device and saffire mix control is in my program file. Iam using a siig firewire card with texas inst. chips, one of the ones recommended by focusrite. The only fix i have seen on windows 7 forum is to open win 7 mixer applet and right click an empty area and put a check mark in the boxes that appear-show disabled devices + show disconnected devices. This fix has apparently helped others to see all their record inputs ( line, digital, stereo mix etc.) On win 7 forum they also say if this fix does not help, then you need to look for updated drivers. Focusrites ver2.0 is supposed to be the latest win 7 64 bit driver.
I realized that I never uninstalled the drivers for my onboard realtek sound, only disabled it in bios. I did a web search to see if this could interfere, but couln't find an answer. Do you know? Should I try uninstalling them in add remove programs? Thanks for your help....Bobby

I would try enabling the onboard first to see if it initiates anything in Win 7.

You shouldn't need to uninstall it, have you read anywhere that others had success after uninstalling?
Do you have the install files to re-install?

I am at a loss here.. can't think what else to try.
