Twist My Heart

So...I'm guilty of more than a little U2 fatigue. It happens. But these RealTracks were too cool for me to ignore. Anyway, here's a demo of a song with my scratch vocals. Each section of the song uses a different combination of instruments, all from this one RealStyle.

Hope these lyrics aren't highly relatable, knowing that it's somewhat unavoidable that somebody out there has been there, done that.

Style is _QUARK.STY (Quark Dublin Slow Guitars)

TWIST MY HEART

Lyrics by R.W. Davis

You said you couldn’t see your future without me
But can you just sit there and say that honestly?
We’ve broken up so many times, you know the score
I’ve been shut out of your life so many times before

And just when I’ve moved on to start my life anew
You call me up to tell me that you’ve been feeling blue
And could I come on over and spend the night with you

Twist my heart and hang my heart out on the line
I’ve missed you so much, but now is not the time
I see your smile every time I close my eyes
And then I remember all of your goodbyes

You said you always felt that we were kindred souls
We complete each other and push on to our goals
We know what each other’s thinking most of the time
We complement one another and make each other shine

Until a slight twist of fate
Made us both hesitate
You said we’d have to wait
But it was just too late

And now that I’ve moved on to start my life anew
You call me up to tell me that you’ve been feeling blue
And could I come on over and spend the night with you

Twist my heart and hang my heart out on the line
I’ve missed you so much, but now is not the time
I see your smile every time I close my eyes
And then I remember all of your goodbyes

You said a lot of things that didn’t make much sense
Our conversations devolved into arguments
I guess you really had a lot that you could say
But you never explained why you always ran away

And just when I’ve moved on to start my life anew
You call me up to tell me that you’ve been feeling blue
And could I come on over and spend the night with you

Twist my heart and hang my heart out on the line
I’ve missed you so much, but now is not the time
I see your smile every time I close my eyes
And then I remember all of your goodbyes

Twist my heart...

Yeah, and then I remember all of your goodbyes

Ron,

This is a great pop song. The vocals, arrangement and tracks selection all work so well. I also really like the vocal processing. Very upfront and clear. Production is great as well - crisp and punchy.

Loved it!

Ron...it's hard not to love the drive of this track...so I guess I'll just love it...if the vocals are a scratch demo version then I would love to hear the non-scratch, non-demo cuts...cause the vocals are there...your songs are always so conversational and the lyrics all fit in the pocket so well...your chord progressions fit the styles you choose to a tee...great to hear this one!

THANKS, Bob! Sometimes I'll double my vocals to blur over my limitations, but on this song I put enough into the vocals to let them stand on their own, for better or worse. (Though I did double the harmonies on the final chorus) Glad you liked it!

THANK YOU, David! Yes sir, your ears don't lie, there's rear bus processing going on here. The gift that keeps on giving--thanks again! This style has a bouncy energy that works really well with it.

THANKS, Dan! Well, when the vocals go "final" Dusty sings them...you'll know the difference. Ha! But I'm flattered that these vocals work for you. All the credit for the lyrics go to my lyricist. I never touch them (intentionally). Glad you enjoyed it!

I don't much of anything about the music of U2, but gosh I really like this mix. It's really good and everything is so clear - good write too. I may have titled the song after the last line of the chorus instead of the first. It may be just me, but I think it makes the title a little more memorable. Maybe something like "All of Your Goodbyes". Regardless great effort and result on this!

Brad, great suggestion on the title. I like that line and lyrical focus, too, and punched it up a bit in how I arranged the song. But my lyricist "owns" the title. He gives me a TON of latitude on the musical interpretation. In return, I just DON'T. CHANGE. HIS. STUFF. Ha! (Sometimes I record his lyrical typos as a joke. I think this is funnier than he does.) Glad you enjoyed the tune!

Cool lines of many.
Great write and, hey, we enjoyed the rare example of the correct spelling of complement in this context. smile

Scratch vocal? It sounds excellent to us.

That is a great arrangement, mix and an amazing all BiaB band.
A showcase in the showcase of the power of the BiaB Wrecking Crew.

And the mix is nice ... open and airy with nobody stepping on one another.

Enjoyed it!

Janice and Bud, why, THANK YOU for the "compliments"! (and THAT's why *I* don't do the lyrics. Ha!) Everything I sing is a "scratch" vocal since I only sing to demo a song. But glad you liked them! Yes, this RealStyle is one of my favorites in the rock/pop genre. Just so many complimentary textures, and so many fun ways to layer them. Probably the only time I'll use it though, so was excited to share with the forum. So glad ya'll liked the song!

I can't say that I know her. smirk
Vocal sounds fine. Tone is good. And most importantly, it is in key.
Cool style. I'll have to steal a couple of those guitar tracks some time.
Good song.

Ron, scratch vocal? Your so called scratch vocal is way better than anything that I can sing!
Outstanding vocal and groove.
Super mix.
One of if not your best to date IMHO.

Mario, THANKS for the listen and the positive review. FWIW, I enjoy your vocals much, MUCH more than mine. Though "voice confrontation" is real, it's not the worst problem on the problem spectrum. Got to be thankful for THAT!

I most definitely prefer hearing your vocals, Ron. There's always been something about hearing the writer's interpretation. Scratch away, m'man --even with harmony!! What a well-developed song. RW Davis is so good at writiing lyrics.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thanks, Marty! Well, I do enjoy singing, and harmonies especially (thank you, Youth Choir!), but Dusty is so, SO polished, and I do love his vocals. Plus he's a BGV demon extraordinaire. So...I compose music that I enjoy, but post songs that I think others will enjoy. And Dusty makes for a much for pleasant listening experience. But I'll no doubt mix in a few of my "scratch" vocals going forward.

Yeah, RW writes really, really good lyrics. Just stunningly good. A LOT of them, too. We probably have a thousand songs in the can at this point, but I know I've lost count...

A cool one.
There are the occasional end of phrase note that bothered me - cadence & cascade always get to me.
Lyrically it's a good narrative but I kept getting bothered by the use of heart twice in a line...it shouldn't bother me but it does.
No one else has mentioned either of the above but since you're still in demo phase I figured I might as well mention them.
COOL song but oh how I loathe U2. My wife was an UNBERfan until Joshua tree so I was constantly drowning it them for years.

Cheers

Rayc, THANKS for the listen! Your comments are always thoughtful and constructive, and I appreciate you taking the time. Alas, this is a "demo" of the U2 insprired RealStyle, but "final" with regard to song form. I'm with you on U2 though, which is why I was surprised how much I dug into the multi-layered instrument treatment on this RealStyle. Hasn't changed my view on U2 a bit though. Ha!
