My Lappy is doing great with Ubuntu for Internet & Email. I want to try Ubuntu Studio. If I install US will it mess up my regular Ubuntu OS or is it just another program?

John,

That Creative Labs audio card is going to be an issue for Ubuntu Studio. Drivers exist; they are a work-around, but functional.
If nothing of major value is stored on your laptop harddrive, my preference would be to nuke Ubuntu Desktop when you install Ubuntu Studio. Their web-related tools are identical.
Choose Ubuntu Studio version 8.04, install, and then download all available updates - before using the O/S. Install LAME from the repository. You will now be working with the JACK audio connection kit, and it is a real brain-twister.

Another option is to keep Ubuntu Desktop, and install the audio Applications that work without JACK and the real-time kernel. Audacity and the Hydrogen percussion sequencer are two examples. This would be my choice, unless you are feeling particularly cocky...

just looking for clues...

Sorry to confuse. Those specs are for my music computer. My Internet computer is the one with Ubuntu Karmic Koala 9.1. I was going to install Ubuntu Studio on that one just for fun and to check it out. From what you said though it's actually a different distro and will replace Karmic. If that's the case I'm not that curious.

Not to hijack this thread, but I would love to know if anyone has gotten BIAB to work in Linux. If so, how? I admit to knowing very little about Linux, other than its open source code. If I can get it to run BIAB and sonar with lower latency than windows 7 in ASIO mode, I'm all about getting it. Also, how do I know it's going to work on my Laptop? Which kind of Linux is best?

Sorry for all the questions, just curious and want to have the most effecient running setup as possible.

Ed,
Oren will best answer this but the answer is it won'y run very well if at all. Have to use Wine which is a windows emulator.
Now it would be real cool if PG made a BIAB/RealBand Linux Distro. Imagin a virgin hard drive with no other OS but the BIAB/RB Distro.

Silvertones,

Thanks for that info. Not sure what "Distro" means? So "Wine" is a version of Linux? And then you would just run BIAB from an external HD? How do you put your sounds on there (Kontakt 4, or Cakewalk TTS-1, etc?)

Is there a good manual or webpage that deals with Linux and Computer Audio? Man, I really sound like a NEWB!!

Wine allows you to run windows applications under Ubuntu.

Distro means distribution version. Linux/Ubuntu and all the rest have people who tweak the kernel of the thing to do certain types of work.

You can put a bare bones version on a usb key and run it that way, or take an older computer and install Ubuntu on that. It runs fast on older systems, not sure about older systems and wine though.

Thanks so much John, I am now looking up Linux info using Google, I'm sure I'll find tons of stuff I don't yet understand.
