so I have 2022 on the internal drive but there's not enough space, therefore I was installing the upgrade on an external drive. But the realtrack folder can only be specified for a single location, (which I find weird as on many DAWs one can specify multiple locations for plugins etc).
So what should I do? I was trying to put the old realtracks in the new location but it's likely to be a mess as it asks me if 'data' folders should be merged, etc.
Should I do a clean reinstall of the old version on the external drive and then install the upgrade on top?

Hi - You could copy the RealTracks folder from your old location (internal) to new location (external). Create a folder /Applications/Band-in-a-Box on your external drive and copy it there. You can then select that as your RealTracks folder location when installing the new version. Alternatively (and easier) copy the entire Band-in-a-Box folder to your external and run Band-in-a-Box from there.

Hi. Yeah I knew that much. As I wrote, I had already tried all that, and I was asked if I wanted to merge the 'data' folder, so I didn't do anything to avoid further wastes of time. ''Alternatively (and easier) copy the entire Band-in-a-Box folder to your external and run Band-in-a-Box from there.''
I don't see how that solves anything. As I wrote, I am upgrading. I am not trying to run anything yet.

You can wipe BIAB completely from your Mac. Then you’ll run the minimum installer from the 2025 drive to install the required support libraries. Now you’ll be able to run BIAB from your external drive.
Many are of the opinion that running from a USB 3 external is slower that having everything installed internally or an external SSD. Having tested all such combinations, I can assure you that the speed difference is there but it’s minor and doesn’t get in the way.
If you have purchased additional styles and packs, you can install them onto the external drive, manually or with the Install Manager depending on how long ago you purchased. These will be in your Purchase History..

You can wipe BIAB completely from your Mac. Then you’ll run the minimum installer from the 2025 drive.... so how does the 2025 upgrade knows that I am upgrading, if I wipe the older version? And yeah, I am using SSD drives. I never said I wasn't, so that stuff is irrelevant. You seem to make a connection between USB3 and SSD, but the two aren't related in any ways. Also, in my experience it is absolutely untrue that the difference between SSD and 'USB3' (as you call it, though you probably mean an external HDD drive), is 'minor'. It is not minor at all, a claim supported by millions other people, including manufacturers such as Apple, Kingston, etc. Try starting your Mac from an external HDD drive and an external SSD, the difference is enormous. For clarity: I have the old BB on an internal SSD, I am downloading the upgrade, and want to install it on an external SSD. But none of that stuff matters. I wasn't discussing what are the faster drives.

You can wipe BIAB completely from your Mac. Then you’ll run the minimum installer from the 2025 drive.... so how does the 2025 upgrade knows that I am upgrading, if I wipe the older version? The version you are upgrading from doesn’t matter. What I posted applies to all years. The latest version includes the features and tracks from previous years except for any add-ons that you have purchased. Those are available in your purchase history for download and installation. This question gets asked and answered every year. And yeah, I am using SSD drives. I never said I wasn't, so that stuff is irrelevant. You seem to make a connection between USB3 and SSD, but the two aren't related in any ways. True but it doesn’t matter. BIAB ships on USB 3 drives for a few years, now but many Mac users still run it on machines that do not have USB 3 ports including two of the Macs that I test on. BIAB isn’t much faster on my M2 Studio Ultra running everything on the 8TB internal drive. Not when it comes to BIAB. I was sharing real world experience. Running BIAB from an external HDD vs SSD is about the same speed. This discussion has been going on for years around here. PG Music has been telling us for years that it doesn’t make much difference. When I tested this over the years, I discovered they were right. For clarity: I have the old BB on an internal SSD, I am downloading the upgrade, and want to install it on an external SSD. But none of that stuff matters. I wasn't discussing what are the faster drives. I have given you the correct advice. What works outside BIAB has nothing to do with it.

Has the 2025 Mac upgrade been released? No, I just dreamed it. Good. Dreams come true. BIAB 2025 for Mac released this morning, See the top of this forum. It appears that those of us with Audiophile can now download FLAC versions of Real Tracks and Drums and no longer require the drive being delivered. The drive being shipped is now a 1TB SSD (it's about time). No more HDDs to add to the collection. At some point, I'll be overwriting one of the many HDDs I've received over the years and use it to run BIAB on my 2012 MBP and Studio. I've ordered the SSD even though I don't need it and compare that with my USB 4 external (works with my MBP over USB 2) and the internal on my M2 Studio. I do this only because I am curious, not because anyone has to. Been doing this every year since I started.
