Hi, I have been a long time BIAB user for mac. I think it was like version 5 or 6. But for many years I have been very disappointed for the lack of support on the mac side over the years and I am very hesitant to upgrade to the newer version because of this. On the PC side, every year, there was always a new version out. but on the mac side, it was like every 2-4 years for a new update or new version. Currently I use version 12 with a softsynth called Sampletank using IAC drivers which works great ,sounds great, and very stable too. The sound is 100x better than the built in QT instruments or any of my outboard midi gear I have. Now would it make a big difference if I upgraded to the new 2010 in sound quality using the realtracks or the realdrums loops? Also does the new version support VST instruments or does is still require IAC still to use standalone softsynths like sampletank? Just a few concerns I have about the new BIAB.

I can't say anything about future development, but the addition of RealTracks from 2009 on is really a huge improvement over the MIDI only previous versions.

I was in the same boat. I used version 4 or 5 until I couldn't run it any more in classic mode on my new Mac.
Then I went to version 12, and it was somewhat of an improvement from earlier versions.
But ver. 2009 (and now 2010) is a big step forward.

You can still use SampleTank via the IAC bus, but I've found that since I've started using the RealTracks I'm using a LOT fewer MIDI tracks. If I need to record MIDI I usually do it in another program, after I export the RealTracks arrangement out of BiaB.

The only downside is the RealTracks take up a lot of room, 93 gigs for the full BiaB installation on my machine.
Of course you don't have to load all the RealTracks on your hard drive, but what's the fun in that ?

The addition of RealTracks alone is worth the price for the upgrade from Ver. 12, IMHO.

Of course all this this is just my opinion, YMMV.
Hopefully this helps.

- Jay

I don't know if I am missing something here or not, but the new 2010 version utilizes an external hard drive. I believe the drive is 120 Gigs.

Hey Gorilla you're absolutely right, the external drive is an option too.

I've always gone for the optical media CD or DVD version (up until this last 2010 version that is).

I have the entire program on my hard drive, but you can certainly run it from the external drive.

Well, if you get the EVERYTHING PAK then you get something like 90 gigs of samples that the RealTracks and RealDrums use. That would take at least 10 Dual Layer DVDs if not more. Plus you'd still need to get a DVD for the installer program and tutorials.

Being a Logic owner and user, Logic 8 came on 8 DVDs. It took FOREVER to install. Band in a Box on a HD? Like an hour if you move all the stuff to your Macs internal HD, or less than that if you want to use the HD as the storage for all the samples.
