This is absolutely brilliant. The first thing that grabbed me was the production.
Bud, your revised mastering chain is incredible. The overall sound is rich and has a 3-D depth and spread to it that really made me feel like I was sitting in the middle of the performance. I listened through headphones as well as through speakers and the production is magical in both situations.
Janice, your singing never stops amazing me. This particular backing really showcases your outstanding ability. The warmth and depth of your voice, and the sincerity of your performance, all shine brightly in this presentation.
Floyd, your arrangement is superb. And those lyrics that you and Bud have written are first class. I love the story and I love the way it develops. The chorus resonates with melancholy and tugs at the heartstrings.
I thoroughly enjoyed this journey.

This song overflows with talent. Floyd has crafted a wistful melody which Janice sings like only she can - skillfully, convincingly and with all her heart. "old ways of forgetting don't work/no matter how i try" are lines that go far beyond usual heartbreak songs. And Bud has mixed all so that everything is crystal clear and punchy. The arrangement is pretty simple, but is shows how important each instrument is, the fiddle feels especially tailored for this song, which naturally shows the versatility of BIAB.

My suggestions regarding Ozone? Hmmm. I’ve used it for 11 years and it’s changed a lot over the years. I’d suggest allowing it to analyze your tune and offer up a module chain. Each of the modules can be deleted or tweaked. And that’s where your ears take over. We have tweaks that we created and saved as module presets. Above all the limiter (final module) is most important, of course, as it establishes your dynamics and final volume levels. Ozone with its gain matching and bypass allows you to instantly check on how changes sound compared to the original. Izotope has always had some good videos and along with YouTube you can do a deep dive. Best to on the journey. Thanks again, J&B

Let's clear this up.... When it comes to songwriting, credit should be given where credit is due. Many of the comments on the lyrics seem to imply that I might be somehow more responsible than Bud. Not true. By a long shot. As I recall, (and that is not necessarily a reliable thing these days) Bud sent me a fairly complete lyric. Well thought out. A lot of good lines, phrases, ideas. IF anything was "lacking" it was a little spit-n-shine. Final polish. (well...and a melody) I've had a lot of experience co-writing. With writers of all level. From Pro hit-writers to people who had no clue whatsoever. (An awful lot of people who end up in Nashville are really bad writers. Most go home right away.) I've done co-writes where I'm simply smoothing things - and co-writes where I have been given little more than a title or an idea and I write the whole thing. A good idea or title is worth a lot. At the time of this co-write, I think Bud might have written 10 songs (probably an exaggeration, but perhaps not) But he was FAR from clueless. I don't remember how this went exactly, but what I did was "take out the bumps". Just make sure that it "falls on the ear" the way it should and says what is intended without unnecessary extras. Little things. Much of that comes with experience. Good songwriters learn quickly. Bud understood all the changes. He picked those things up quickly and incorporated them into his writing. To improve as a songwriter only 2 things have to happen. You have to know that you are not quite there and you have to pay attention and figure out why (or have someone help with that). Recognize your faults and fix 'em. After about 3 songs like that, Bud no longer needed any help whatsoever. One or 2 "bigger points" and a bunch of "small detail stuff" and he was off-and-running... And I benefit from someone else's way of thinking. Bud writes phrases that would not occur to me. Bud deserves most of the credit here. (If I recall correctly... ) fj I feel bad that some folks will not read this (if they do not re-visit threads). I would have put this up right away, but we have been traveling (again. my wife just won't stay home. and I can't convince her to go alone) Thank you floyd. Every one of our 90 collabs with you have been both a pleasure and a learning experience. From me learning about “bricks and mortar” in writing lyrics (plus much more) to Janice learning how to use harmony as accents and builds it has all been and remains memorable. J&B
