Great man, swingin' cat, his additions to the compendium would fill more than two books -- and they have.

RIP Herb, still learning from ya.

Thankfully Herb's music will live on. I hadn't heard about him passing until now. Fortunately he lived to a ripe old age of 88.

The link is great! Some really good music being played.

May he rest in peace. Hopefully the heavenly choir has a new lead guitar player.

I want to know at what age one becomes ripe. Is it the brown spots on my hands? Golly the wife has 'em too and she's not even 50 yet. Make someone else a fine woman someday, maybe soon. Brown spots grey hair and all.

GDaddy,

Thanks, as always, for pulling out the gems. That is what I love about Youtube. We can now watch people like Herb play well after their years here. I have been dropping YouTube videos at the onset of several of my music classes as the students are settling in. Most of the time, they are oblivious. But there are moments when one will say, "Who was that?" And that is why I do it. They think their speed idols are only from today. Some of their minds get blown when they hear a guitarist from 50 years ago rip through their guitar neck.

Thanks,
RickeG

As my heroes pass, my own advancement in years becomes more difficult to ignore.

I think I'll go listen to "Two For The Road" right now.

Herb Ellis was featured on Andre Previn's jazz album "My Fair Lady" in the 60's. Having sung the score in high school choir I was intimately familiar with all aspects of all the tunes, and having been noodling on the piano for a few years, I could pick out the melodies and most chords. At that time I knew I should be liking jazz, but just didn't get it. When I got my hands on this album and listened to the creative "rewriting" of the tunes, and the knockout soloing by Herb and Andre, I "got it" and nothing has been the same since. Herb Ellis on my mind whenever I think of my roots in music.
