I have just received my m-audio fast track pro and at the end of the quick start booklet there is a stick on label with the following.
"Warning
this product contains chemicals, including lead, known to the state of california to cause (cancer and) birth defects or other reproductive harm
wash hands after handling"
very strange (and its not an April fools joke), not entirely sure if they are refering to the booklet or the fast track pro itself, I take it its the fast track.

I guess it's to protect themselves from lawsuits in the US. I once bought a US-made mountain-bike (Specialized). There was a booklet that came with it and it rained, so I read it. It stated that I had to check every nut & bolt, the breaks, tire-pressure and whatnot each and every time I planned to use the bike  I also had to wear a helmet and other protective gear and do some other things I can't remember right now. I never read the booklet that came with my Leatherman tool, but I bet it was something like: "Warning, may contain sharp parts"

In Europe products can not contain any lead even if it was a solder joint in a place no one would ever go much less ingest.
Fear of the unknown and insurance claims will soon get us to the point we can no longer enjoy Di-hydro-monoxide and that's no AF joke, people have died after prolong exposure in it......H2O....water.....I'm going to lunch now...:)

That refers to the lead used in soldering the printed circuit board of the actual card together.
Not a realworld problem unless you intend to lick, eat, or otherwise ingest the soundcard.

I live in the great nanny state of California and that exact wording is in every repair shop you walk into be it an automotive repair place, furniture, electronics, anything. It's a complete joke. Since the population of California is larger than the whole country of Canada, the entire US mostly follows what the left wing nut jobs in our state legislature decide to come up with. This goes for environmental laws, mileage standards, offshore oil drilling bans, all that kind of stuff. The California EPA I swear is bigger than the federal one and the feds mostly follow what we do. We're the ones that initiated this idiotic notion of labeling carbon dioxide as a greenhouse gas.

It's called RoHS, and it means 'Restriction of Hazardous Substances.' Many products have a RoHS sticker on them now adays. The EU and other European countries initiated RoHS controls a few years ago. What that means, basically, is that you can not import anything that has lead, mercury, PCBs or several other substances. It's a huge pain for manufacturers, because all of your parts have to be RoHS compliant. California was supposed to have adopted the RoHS standards as well....the Independent Nation of California, don't you know...but that would have prevented my company in Washington state from sending certain of our products to California, because it would have been illegal for us to ship there. If California can't import mercury or lead, how will they obtain the federal mandated compact flourescent light bulbs?
LED lights are no solution. Those contain gallium and arsenic.

Exactly. This shows how completely out of touch these people are. Those curly florescents have to be properly and carefully disposed of, if they're simply thrown away like everybody does and then get broken in a landfill, those extremely toxic chemicals get released into the air and cause much worse damage than the energy savings is supposed to prevent. Sheer idiocy.

I've been involved with RoHS, as it's known, for my ex company in the UK. Once you are in to the detail there are exemptions for military and aerospace, also some of the banned substances can be used in specific applications. The biggest pain is that OEM's have to keep records / systems to be able to demonstrate compliance with the directive, down to component level. Some product types such as medical and measuring equipment are currently exempt. The directive was also introduced to combat the problems of electrical and electronic waste going to landfill and 'toxic' substances leaching out. Many countries are moving down this road in differing ways. The EU has also introduced the WEEE Directive (Waste electrical and electronic equipment) directive that puts the onus on manufacturers to pay towards safe product disposal at end of life.

Also no-one can really give any concrete evidence as to product reliability when using solders that do not contain lead. Lead free products have only been around for a minimal number of years and obviously we have 50 + years data on leaded solders. That's why aerospace and military are exempt. Some of the science appears to be a little suspect around the whole introduction of the RoHS directive. Political pressure which ignored much of the scientific evidence for and against

Consumer Reports once did a review of jack stands. Those are little supports that you put under the axle of your car after you've jacked it up, so that you can work under the car. Every jack stand they reviewed had a warning label that said that under no circumstances was it to be used to support a car while someone was working under it.
The review explained that (a) Those labels were probably there because some lawyers thought it would make the manufacturers less likely to be sued if their product collapsed and killed someone working under a car. (b) They also said that their own lawyers told them that the warnings wouldn't make any difference at all, because if you were to heed the warnings, the product would be useless for the purpose for which it was advertised and sold.

You could start me on the environmental impact of cars which of course are subject to much legislation in a similar vein. The Prius is touted as the environmentally friendly car to drive but if you analyse it's whole life impact 'cradle to grave' then it is worse for this planet than many 'ordinary' cars. I have read that a study showed that the 'Hummer' over it's life taking into account manufacture, emissions, and disposal is more environmentally friendly than a Prius.
