I just got BIAB the other day. Maybe there are settings for the soloist that I'm not finding but every solo I've added is way out of time and also off key. Currently its pretty much worthless. Any insights?

A soloist out of time and off key. Sounds like a Guitar player I once know.

But to your point you must have some configuration off. Tell us more about your set up specifally hardware. Is it only the soloist channel? what is your sound source? I assume we are talk about midi and not the RT's?

I sure someone will chime in with a fix.

Hi smoothie,

Some questions that spring to mind. Have you set the key for you song? Is this a MIDI or Realtrack solo? Is double-time engaged? As jazzmandan has said, it must be some errant setting(s) somewhere. The BIAB Soloist function is exceptionally good. Once I know a little more about your song settings, I might be able to help.

Regards,
Noel

Hello Noel, Jazzmandan and everyone,

My pc is Dell 3 ghz, 2 gig ram, xp sp2. soundcard: Presonus FP10 firewire interface. I'm using BIAB 2010 with real tracks. I've tried midi and real tracks and get the same results. I haven't activated double-time.

Any other info is appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Paul,

Have you set the key for your song? It's the drop-down box between the tempo and the style window. If you have set the key, could you please post a section of your chord progression and let me know what key you have set.

Regards,
Noel

Ok, give us exact details of how you set up your tune. Key sig, tempo, style, how many choruses, 1st/2nd endings, any tag endings etc. If it's a RT soloist explain which one and if it's a midi soloist, detail exactly how you set it up in the midi soloist window.
Off the top of my head I'm thinking you're using a RT soloist outside of it's recommended tempo range but for midi soloists I haven't a clue, those normally work great.

Best way let us hear what you mean by posting a link here to an MP3 file.

If you started with a MIDI file you may have some key and tempo changes imbedded in the code. Use the Event Editor (?) to check to see if any goofy hidden stuff on the track.

Even the solos on demo songs are out of time and off key. Sounds like a soundcard issue, yes?

I'm not sure how to post a file in this forum. If anyone can share how to do that, I will post one.

Thanks,

It could be that your soundcard is set to 48000 Hz (48 kHz). BIAB needs 44.1 kHz. This is usually solved by selecting an option that says something like "allow applications to take exclusive control of this device". To get to this on my system (Vista 32), I right-click the speaker icon, select "Playback devices, double-click on "Speakers", select the "Advanced" tab, and then put a checkmark against the "exclusive control" option.

Here's a note about it in PGMusic's FAQs.

http://www.pgmusic.com/techfaq20.htm#13

If this doesn't work, please list a couple of the styles that are causing your problems.

Also, please try an entirely MIDI style to see if the problem persists with tracks that are exclusively MIDI (e.g. Classy.STY in the "Jazz" section. This style has a solo in its demo song and will thus allow easy assessment of the situation. NOTE: Do not use =Classy.STY for this test as this style has Realtracks in it.)

Thanks, Noel.

I'll check out the tech faq.

My card is set to 44.1 khz.

To hear demos go to www.myspace.com/paulladendorf and check out the last two songs....one w/real tracks and one midi.

In both the MIDI and RealTracks examples posted, the sax is in tune with the backing tracks.

Rhythmically, you are trying to invoke a Swing Feel solo over a Straight Feel song. That doesn't usually work out all that well.

Perhaps you are talking note selection and the fact that the sax is playing "outside" in a few instances, rather than the root. That's typical of a jazz player, you may want to pick a different soloist or realtrack to better fit your chords and genre in that case. But they are in. tune.

Hi Paul,

I agree with Mac, the songs are in-tune to my ears. What I hear is a very typical jazz arrangement. Like Mac, I also hear even some 8th notes played against a swing backing. This can make it feel like it's out of time. If you want, you can you send me a copy of the SGU/MGU files and I can load them into BIAB and have a look. (it's nadams96 @ gmail . com) - just remove the spaces in the email address.

Regards,
Noel

Mac is righton here, as usual. The problem is Mixing the straight feel with the swing and its is going to sound strange. Think, John Denver singing Fly me to the Moon.

It may work for Country and Rock and Roll ( think Donny and Marie... I'm a little bit country, she's a little bit rock and roll). But here those outside Jazz notes, just sound, well, out of key! Like inviting Miles Davis to a hootanany (OK enough of the examples....)

I did listen to some of the other stuff on smoothie's site. Very nice vocalist with guitar backing. Perhaps Paul, you just need to be more careful in your selection of accompainment tracks. Remember the RT's which are labelled Solo, versus Rhythm, are going to improvise over the chords, which means they will indeed step in and out of the pocket rhymically and strech the harmony with leading tones which add tension (...its a Jazz thang). Do I also hear you singing with the Solo Horn (somewhere why low on the left channel)?? This won't work (IMO) since you are following one melody line and the horn player is following another. .
