I think it's a good song with good storytelling, and the arrangement supports the song very well.
Your vocals, while not bad at all, are the weakest part, since you have to strain too often to hit the higher notes.
Transpose the song down a third or a fifth.
I've heard rumors that BIAB is pretty good at that grin

Hi Laurent,

Lots of great advice and kind words from you, thank you. I think the lack of drums maybe to do with YouTube and Soundcloud. Certainly I did reduce the drums and bass on my DAW as I didn’t want them to dominate what is meant to be a gentler song. They still sound at the right level and present through my monitors in the DAW, I think maybe YT and SC have taken their 20% cut!! It’s something for me to remember on future submissions and to audition and allow for this discrepancy on the various sites. And you’re absolutely right about getting contrast into the musical mix. Glad you liked the video, it’s the element of the whole production process I hate doing the most…it’s too time consuming.

Thank you again Laurent, much appreciated. Kind regards.

Thank you BD

I agree with you 100%, the vocals are the weakest link…. Goodbye!! I think I tried the song initially in D found that too high, C is my usually my key, but that didn’t even work, A at the time seemed the best fit, but perhaps G might have been better, can’t remember if I tried it or not. It maybe a case I’ll try it again down the track, it’s just that at the moment I can’t stand to hear the song. Thank you for your kind words on the storytelling and arrangement.

Kind regards

Hi K-Dub Ya
Your vocal does sound a little thin and strained and lost in the mix.
A lower key and a dash of EQ in the right places could add a little warmth.
On the plus side, the lyrics are very well written and the choice of instruments is fitting.

Vic

Okay, K-Dub Ya, ya either deleted my comment here or i forgot to push that Post Reply button.

That was when i was on YT. The sound always seems so much better on Soundcloud. I really like the mix. Everything sits perfect and proud, and the vocal stands out with the perfectly mixed harmony.

Enjoy whatever happens!

Thank you Vic,

Yes, I should have paid more attention to the vocal. I knew they weren’t exactly as I wanted them to be. I guess that’s where I thought the song wasn’t as good as it could have been. But on the upside, I was pleased with the arrangement and lyrics. Always leave room for improvement!!

Cheers, kind regards

Hi Marty,

I’d never delete your comments, they’re too highly regarded. I did reply to you on YouTube though.

It is the same mp3 used in SC that was used inYT, so like Mr Dee perhaps I should use the wav file instead. Who knows what these platforms do to our newborns. There’s room for improvement, as there always should be, but I'm glad you enjoyed it and the mix was good for you.

Cheers Marty.

A nice gentle 70s folk sound. The tin whistle is a nice add. Good write.

Lee, what a brilliant song. A great but very sad story set to music. Loved that whistle.
Loved the song

Thank you Mario,

Yeah, that whistle has worked really well and carries the song more than any other instrument. It created the right atmosphere.

Sorry to hear about your MIL. It’s hard for those of us who haven’t experienced it to comprehend the devastation and heartbreak. I can think of a few countries who are living this today. I’d like to think that as a species we learn from our mistakes, but there are times when I question it.

Cheers Mario, much appreciated.

Well done all around.
An excellent presentation of a tough subject ... one that is sadly on repeat.
Nice mix and the whistle was a great addition.

Thank you for your kind review J&B.

Yes, a tough subject and lesson that we each generation has to learn. Too often they learn the hard way.

Appreciate your kind words and listen. Kind regards.
