Hi,
Having a lot of issues with playback:

After a fresh re-install of 2026, BIAB loads with defaults and will play back first time.
As soon as i choose another song, BIAB is silent and although I can see activity in the Chord Sheet, no sound is heard.
If I return to the default song, this is now also silent.
If I trash prefs, using the "Return to Factory Settings", iot sometimes crashed the whole Win11, machine, but even when it does not, the sound is not restored

I am also occasionally seeing "Acess violation at address 00000000001F1565 in module "bbw64.exe", (offset 11565). Read Address FFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF.

I have reinstalled BIAB twice.

Take a look in Options | MID/Audio Driver Setup. What do you have selected for audio drivers - MME, WAS, or ASIO? Try switching this to WAS (that's the default) and see if you have sound now. Or, if it's already set at WAS, try MME. Also, is MIDI playback using a default synth (Coyote Wavetable is the default there). Returning "Most" settings to factory settings wouldn't have changed your drivers.

Another test you can do is close the program and add a file called safemode.txt to the Preferences folder. Band-in-a-Box should boot up with "safe mode" in red on the splash screen, and it will load only default settings with no plugins etc.

You should also install the latest update patch.

I fear if I simply delete of the program, via windows or your download manager, it's going to leave hidden files somewhere and this might be where the trouble is.

I've followed this thread because sometimes I can help troubleshoot, but normally in BIAB there could be distorted sound with a mismatched driver but not NO sound. Plus it's odd it works then stops.

Let me ask the question you've already tested, I'm sure: when BIAB has no sound, do other digital audio programs on your computer give sound using the same driver? If so, that rules out a host of non-BIAB possibilities that could be coincidence.

I solved the problem - I hope. It was a corrupt song file (a song I created) I was using for testing. Who would have thought a corrupt song file would crash the whole of BIAB and blue screen Win 11! The song was definitely working the previous day. Son far, after manually rewriting a new song file and deleting the other one, It's working.

Spoke too soon. As soon as i fully emulated my previous file (which crashed windows), i got the same problem. The song is White Xmas, which is 32 bars long. My system is a PC with 64gb of memory. It is very stable everywhere else and is the latest win11 build.
I believe I might have identified the problem. Because I am using this file for practice, I set the number of repeats to 40. Band in a box can't cope with this here. It did before, but now it cannot do this and my whole system crashes. I have currently set up the number of repeats to 10 and it is working.

This is the infamous Band-in-a-Box "255-bar limit"—a known issue that has been documented on the PG Music forum for years.
The explanation: BiaB has a technical limit of 255 bars maximum per song (including choruses). If your track is 32 bars long, for example, then:

10 choruses → 320... (actually already pushing the limit), but the key point is that as soon as the total (bars × choruses) exceeds this internal threshold, the program crashes with exactly this type of error: "Access violation... write of address in bbw64.exe." PG Music fixed part of this bug in the Mac version ("Fixed: Access violation and program crash if adding a repeat to song that requires too many bars (more than 255)"), but the limit itself remains in the Windows version, and many users still run into it.

Possible solutions:

Stay under the limit: generate your track with a number of choruses that keeps the total under ~255 bars (so for a 32-bar track, a maximum of ~7–8 choruses).
Work around it by exporting and then looping in a DAW:

Generate the track with just one chorus in BiaB
Export it as a WAV file
Import it into a DAW and duplicate/loop the track as many times as you like (40 times, if necessary)
You retain full control and completely avoid the BiaB limit

Simpler: Alternatively, you can select your entire track and gently press F10. That might do the trick...

That one drive link did not work for me. We had a discussion about this some time back ( within the past year). I seem to remember it was concluded that the # of repeated choruses did NOT impact on the 255 bar limit. The limit only applied to the # of bars. I remember testing this with that conclusion.

I just tried the F10 (Play and loop) on a 100 bar song and it is currently playing fine.

Someone from PGM said here a year or few back that the limit for (bars*repeats) is much higher than 255. IIRC it was 2000.

32x40 doesn't exceed that (1280), though it's possible that my memory of the number is wrong and/or it's possible that the number has changed.

Edit: It would be helpful if PGM has or will document this somewhere ... so far I've failed to find an authoritative reference to either the 255 bar limit, or the limit for bars*repeats.

Well if this is the 256 limit it should be fixed, and could be fixed by making BIAB count the number of bars before rendering and either rendering less or putting up a flag to the user, preventing it. It's really bad programming to allow a program to crash windows.
Meanwhile the user is left clueless as to the cause. I shall have to rebuild my preferences again and wasted hours on redowloading the app. It's just shoddy.
If users had already identified the issue years before it's pretty poor. Though support is very good, so much of the program is really naff, win 95 feel- Still.

This was suggested... hmmm at least couple of dozen times while I was here, and I imagine many many times before that.

I can clearly understand why there is a limit. Tracks take time & computer resources to generate / re-generate. However, with modern computers, a limit of lets say +100/+150 bars is very doable. Having said that, if things are left in same state, there should be at least a pop up that would warn user that bar limit is reached.

I believe you're not mistaken, though I haven't actually tried it recently.

What PGM also said, though, is that if a song has bars*choruses that totalled more than 255 it would work OK as a greater limit applied for chorus repeats. I've so far failed to find the the post where that was written.

The 255 bar limit has many times been asked to be increased, but it has, AFAICS, never happened. I image there's some fundamental constraint that PGM have and wish to keep, probably relating to backwards compatibility.

Oh, for certain, yes ... as an electronics and software guy so familiar with that, it didn't even occur to me to say that, sorry.

There are plenty of ways, in principle at least, to remove that limit, but they all need extra data somewhere and that can't always be done without changing the basic structure of the data. That's fine for new software, but if old software cannot understand the new data, it can't work properly.

In the very early days of BiaB, when storage and memory was scarce, every bit and byte bad a functional cost, so data was structured as efficiently as feasible. I'm pretty sure PGM (probably Peter) agonised over whether or not to make the limit bigger, but figured it would "happen so rarely" that it wasn't worth the cost. I believe the early program was mostly for jazz musicians and most jazz has a 32-bar basic form and multiple choruses over which one improvises.

To put that "early" in context, the size of a floppy disk back at BiaB's start was commonly just 720kB with some 1.44MB "double density" disks around. The early Atart-ST had, I believe, only 360kB. One floppy disk would have to hold a collection of songs, not just a few.

When I tried the songfile with the "10 choruses" setting that you have saved in the file, it played fine. When I changed 10 choruses to 40 choruses, though, things went strange and the only way that I could exit BIAB was to use Task Manager. I've reported my findings to the development team.

The limit is about 2000 bars so there shouldn't be a problem - theoretically. This particular song works perfectly in my testing up to 35 choruses, which is 1120 bars. There is definitely some unexpected behaviour beyond that, so we will need to look into that.

I suggest that you set the song to "loop entire song" (overall repeat), turn off the lead-in bars, and set a tag ending to skip the ending bars until the very end. Then just set the song to 5 or 10 choruses so that you get a lot of variation without using a huge amount of memory.
