Not one of Gershwin's better songs, IMHO, but at least it's public domain. Ira's lyrics are ace. I tried to take some inspiration from Chet Baker's brilliant rendition, but quite sure I fell well short of that.

RealTracks in style: ~~768:Bass, Acoustic, Jazz Sw 110
RealTracks in style: ~~771:Piano, Acoustic, Rhythm Jazz Sw 110
RealTracks in style: ~~938:Guitar, Acoustic, Rhythm JazzFreddie Sw 110
RealDrums [in style:JazzBrushes: a: Brushes Swirling b: Brushes Busier
Harmonica - Me
Vocal - Me

Lyrics:
They're writing songs of love, but not for me
A lucky star's above, but not for me
With love to lead the way I've found more clouds of gray
Than any Russian play could guarantee

I was a fool to fall and get that way
Heigh-ho!, Alas! And also, lack-a-day
Although I can't dismiss the memory of her kiss
I guess she's not for me

Hi Rob!
I’ve never heard this Gershwin number, but I guess that’s understandable given the world I live in. It’s got a great feel to it. I’d be interested in hearing what attracted you to it? Is it because it had harmonica solo potential, or another reason? Good choice!

Your harmonica is as brilliant as ever, and despite you dissing your own vocal, it has qualities that really help portray the genre and set the context/scene for the song. I could imagine this in a smoke-filled club. As I have written elsewhere this week, I love hearing songs where people use their own voice - but I completely understand also why some choose to use AI or Fiverr. There’s something about having the human heart or soul on display (but your tribute to that young Fiverr man a while back was a real treat, albeit in a tragic context).

Well done - you’ve succeeded in making me want to listen to An American in Paris and Rhapsody in Blue while I do this morning’s vacuuming and mopping. Thanks for bringing this unknown (to me) song to my attention! Good job!

Andrew

Hi Andrew! I did this song mainly because it was public domain. I would rather post Blue Skies, a great PD song by Berlin, but I can't seem to get a good vocal take no matter how many different approaches I try. The first two notes are an open ascending fifth and it's very tricky, at least for me. I wish someone else on the forum would sing it, then I'd be happy. Nigel would be great but he's been absent. Also, I edited out my "self-diss." Thanks for reminding me about that. If you get a chance, listen to Chet Baker's version of "But Not For Me." It's so good! Thanks also for the excellent review of my version. It's very much appreciated. Good luck as you continue your own musical journey.

Great job on this, Rob!
Taking on a classic associated with Chet Baker is no small feat,
but you really brought your own soulful vibe to it.
Your vocals carry the weight of Ira’s brilliant lyrics perfectly,
and that harmonica adds such a beautiful, melancholic touch.
The backing tracks provide a lovely, relaxed swing that ties it all together.
Don't sell yourself short—this is a wonderful rendition !
Andi ;-)

Hi Rob.
Although I never can understand the point of so many strange chords in the genre of jazz,
this effort is a super relaxed and pleasant on my ears.
Well did.

Great cover and I love your harmonica playing.

Read the title and instantly thought, "Cool. It's in the PD now." Cooler still that you are the one singing it, Bob. Chet's version is one of the best, but i'd always trade it to hear your harp. The two parts you credit to "me" blend so well. Quite the range on your vocal too. Perfect quality.

i stayed for Sunny Side, so now i'm hooked again. Great stuff here, Bob.

Enjoy whatever happens!

This is one of my favorite songs to call on a casual. Great job with the vocals and harmonica. Digging it from start to finish!

Hi Rob,

What a low, sultry voice. From what I know of Gershwin, he couldn't sing as sultrily (or intimately) as you!
You sang and recorded this very well.
And that harmonica really finishes it off.
Truly beautiful!

Andi, thanks for such a great review and confidence booster! Yes, it was daunting, knowing how good Chet's version is. Thanks again, my friend!

Thanks yet again, Floyd! As I've said in the past, I doubt that I'd be singing at all if it wasn't for your tech help and encouragement. Really appreciate it!

Vic, I've dumbed down the chords in some of my jazz pieces and they still sounded good through BIAB's jazfred RS. So I don't know how to explain it. Maybe I'll ask Steve.
