Bill.
*Try setting BiaB to nonclean notation -> in the Notation view, across the top of the bottom notation window, uncheck "Clean". Then do a test Recording of the MIDI from your keyboard. See if there are extraneous notes in the nonclean view.
*If there are, I suspect that Percussion Bank data is being sent by your keyboard. It is typical of certain synths or keyboards that Percussion data (Drums) is sent with a duration value of 0. However, when that data is on a channel *other* than the Percussion Bank channel, it will look and act like notes in a Melodic Bank. Lots of notes. Wrong notes.
Forget about bandwidth and all that hoopla, MIDI data is so tiny that it does not matter.

bill. a few years back i had a similar midi prob , with extra stuff. (i was useing a regular daw..pg powertraks.) if i remember it was a roland i borrowed from a mate. how i realised the prob was i used a little utility in powertraks at the time called midimon.exe. what you might try is essentially a dumb midi keyboard with no sounds. they are about 80 buks now or so. run a test etc. n see if you still get the same prob/anomolies.
one other thing ..a tip, sometimes if ya got other active devices on the usb bus, sometimes they can "choke" the bus if they are very active communicating with the pc. it doesnt sound like this is your case..but something to be aware of.
retired puter engr....powertracks on amd......NICE ! "what is the black art of audio engineering ?" my silly songs...motagator.com/bmanning see my tips in the tips section.

Ok, I will try "unclean."
I think on my synth, each instrument is a separate channel. It's supposed to be sending KB info on channel 1. However, I noticed that channel #2 is getting some spurious data. 65535 ticks long? Boy, that's really weird ! ! It's the biggest a 16 bit integer can get !
So, is it standard for percussion data to be 0 ticks duration? Too bad we don't have a way to filter those out, since are are dealing with notes that DO have a non-zero duration. A cymbal or tympani roll would have a non-zero duration though.
The filter option on RECORD does not provide a way to distinguish notes that are of zero or non-zero duration, as far as I can tell.
Thanks for your suggestions. I especially like the idea of a "cheapie" MIDI keyboard.
I will try everything I can.

I think on my synth...
What synth?? Bill, it's been asked several times now including Peter. If you don't provide all the info requested it's hard to help you get to the bottom of this. What keyboard are you using? It's likely someone here has the same one and can tell you all about how to set it up.

Bob, he answered that on page two:
I'm using a Roland Juno-G for the KB input, with the USB-MIDI mode. A lot of synthesizers nowadays use that, rather than the old serial 38.4 Kbaud interface. It's a lot faster with USB of course, since that's 400 Megabaud.
I think the problem may be "stutter notes" from the keyboard.

Filtering isn't likely necessary. I think your keyboard's internal settings need a going over, likely that it is sending all data on one MIDi channel or something like that.

Oh crap, sorry Bill I obviously missed that. I hate when that happens...
Anyway, I downloaded the manual for your Juno to see if there's anything there and the one thing that struck me is there is nothing that I can see that talks about using it as a master controller but it does mention you can put it into "midi mode" when using the usb cable and it will work with the included Sonar LE so it implies it should work ok as a controller. Every other keyboard manual I've seen has a whole chapter devoted to using it as a controller, setting up midi channels, multitimbral mode vs single patch mode, how all the sliders, buttons etc can be configured in controller mode and other things like that. I don't know but maybe it's limited as a controller and that may have something to do with your problem, it certainly has a ton of live performance features though. Do you have another midi keyboard you can try like an old DX7 or something? Also, it might be worth it to not use the usb and go with a standard midi cable. I've had problems with using usb with some controllers and had to use regular midi.

There is a MIDI monitor in Band-in-a-Box (see button on toolbar), and that will show you exactly what is being transmitted by your keyboard.
