I am running biab on hp laptop which has 3 usb ports. I have axiom 25 keyboard controller using midi via usb on one port. Because of major latency problems I added a mbox audio interface into another usb and of course I have biab in the third outlet. Now I can run everything but I have to use the mouse pad thingie on the laptop and I really perfer using a mouse. If I use a usb hub what should I put into the hub and what should go direct to the laptop? I also would like to add a larger external hard drive. Can I run one through a hub as well?

Get a POWERED hub and all your troubles will be gone. Do not buy an unpowered one.

Hello Earl,
Devices that don't require much power (e.g. your mouse), or that aren't powered by USB (e.g. a synth that plugs into the wall) should go on the hub. But as mentioned, a self-powered hub is the best solution, since your computer might not supply enough power via USB if you have too many power hungry devices.

Another solution is a laptop stand, some of them contain a powered hub, so you can leave all your devices plugged into the stand. I bought a stand without a powered hub (I love having my laptop elevated on the stand at my desk) But now I regret it because my new laptop has fewer USB ports.

I have a laptop cooler with a fan and 4 powered USB ports. On another computer I have a powered 7 port hub.
I always opt for powered hubs, because they are more versatile.

Sometimes I use 4 or 5 USB devices, most external drives with big sampling libraries or projects, then I must to use a powered USB hub with a 3.5 ft. extension USB cable attached to my computer desk for connect too those fastidious iLOK and Steinberg dongles.
