Hello forum, I need help. I am trying to re connect and set up my studio computer. I had to shut it down some time ago for a home construction job (actually the building of my physical studio). In any case my problem is that on start up I keep getting the screen about system was incorrectly shut down and to choose the mode in which the system is to re-boot (safe, normal, last setting, etc). I have tried them each one and the system keeps cycling through that screen. I' ver tried disconnecting the power and changing the type of start up in the f2 menu. My system is a dedicated pent 4, hyperthread, dual processing, 1mg ram, running xp pro. Can anyone give me some suggestions how I can get past that screen. Thanks, D.

Before you get there, go into the BIOS and set the system time. Then try again.

I was also confused because the title bar says Windows 98, but the text says Windows XP Pro.

If it's as Matt says, the system time, then it might be a problem with the battery on your motherboard. Just a thought.

Thanks for the prompt replies. Sorry about the Windoz98, the line should read xp pro. I checked the time on the bios "system time" and it was ok, i even set it back an hour, exited and saved, and tried it with the same result. system date is reading correctly as well. The frustrations of computers, as this was working fine when I originally shut it down and separated monitor, keyboard, and mouse for storage. When I started up I made sure the peripherals were connected before rebooting. Anyother suggestions out there other than repair shop or boat anchor? Thks D.

Dennis,

You need to determine the cause first. So far you are only seeing the result: it keeps rebooting without finishing. You need to do this and get the Stop Codes: as you turn on the PC, start pressing the F8 key repeatedly right away (on some PCs you have to wait till immediately after the video BIOS or System BIOS splash screens are done, but before Windows starts to load). This is often easy, but not always.

When you succeed, you will get an expanded selection of options (Safe Mode, etc.). Choose the one that says "Do not restart on failure ..." (or something similar). You will then get the infamous Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). That's good. There will be an error code listed, and perhaps additional info. The error codes are in this format:
Windows Stop Code 0x00000000 (0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000).
There are always 8 characters after the 0x. The leading zero's preceding the first non-zero character are place holders. The most important of these codes is the first set. The codes in parentheses are sub-codes that can sometimes help, but usually are not needed to solve the problem. So if the codes were 0x000000EA (0x00001234 0x000095C7 0x000000BD), all you should need to research would be the 0x000000EA Code.

Sometimes you also see text near the top that looks like this: PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. If you see some message like that as well, write it down. The last clue you might find will be if it tells you a particular file that is having the problem. Take note of that as well.

Now here's a good web site that summarizes the Stop Codes and often points to solutions: http://www.aumha.org/a/stop.php

This should get you going. Good luck!

If you can't get to the screen that Chuck is referring to I'm going to recommend that you try something that is going to sound really stupid. Before you reboot, remove everything from every USB port that you have. When I say everthing, I mean everything....even your mouse and keyboard. If the computer does a boot to anything then you can plug your mouse and keyboard back in, but not before. I've got a computer that for some unknown reason take a fit once every 6 months and won't boot with anything connected tot he USB ports.

Forum members thanks for the replies. Keith and Gibson thanks for the suggestion. I did unplug all my USB connections, but that was an uneducated guess, and I still had problems. I certainly will try that first if the problem ever arises again. Chuck, thank you for the information, it worked! I had to do a few things differently but the ending result was the creation of a new boot that got me into the computer. I’ve gotten the latest upgrades and have turned the system on and off a couple of times and everything seems to be working fine in that regard. Now all I have to do is start slowly re-connecting up and re-introducing my cubase, layla, vbt-1, mixers, BIAB 2010, PTPA12, etc. Hopefully all will work and for the first time in a few years I will be able to finally start using my “stuff”! Thanks again, DennisD

Just to be sure, Dennis...you mentioned you have turned on and off a few times. I hope that means you have done a proper shutdown; if not, you're going to find yourself right back where you started from.

John, thanks for the heads up reminder. I always use proper log on, log off, and shut down procedures barring power outages. I use the same principals with my studio equipment as well. My next major purchase will be a small ups power supply. Ah the never ending story of GAS.

Keith and Gibson, what you describe may be Windows turning off the power to the USB ports. This has happened to me in the past until I shut of the USB power saver control. Since then every USB port always stays on. You can read how to so this here.
