Hi All,

Since installing update 299, my BiaB has been behaving a bit erratically. I am finding it less stable for sure, but I'll ignore that for the moment and focus on something that I'm hoping will be a bit easier for folks to offer suggestions about. Everytime I open the Stylepicker it asks to re-build the style list. If I pick a style, listen and then attempt to select it again, it asks to re-build the stylelist, everytime I open BiaB or attempt to select a new style. It only takes a short while for the re-build, but it always asks to rebuild!? Are others finding this? Is this normal now?

BiaB has always worked fine on my PC without problem til recently and all my other audio software is working without issue.

Glen

Hi Glen,

It sounds like it might be time to try Opt >> Return to Factory Settings. I'd try the upper option first, then the lower option if nothing changes. Previous settings are saved so it is always possible to get back to them.

Regards,
Noel

Hey Noel,

Yeah, I was wondering if that was my only option. Sounds like it's time to pull the trigger.

I'll give it a shot.

Well, I tried the "Return to Factory Settings" and no difference. It hates my style list for some reason. Can't say I'm really surprised that going back to the factory settings worked, but it was worth a shot. I have even tried re-installing the 299 update, just in case something went wrong there. This really tanks. Everything used to work fine! I know something is going on that's wacked.

I've had the software balk tonight at one point and reference a STOMBXX.exe, when identifying some sort of text input error. I don't recall these sorts of thing happening before installing 299, when I was using BiaB. I'm going to have to start taking notes when weird things happen, so I can post them. Any other suggestions?

Glen,

If you have the previous update, you can always reinstall the older update over the top of build #299. That should take it back to the earlier version. I have done that a couple of times in the past and it's worked fine. Do you have plenty of hard-drive space available? You've got a pretty up-to-date computer so I'm guessing that disk space is not an issue.

Do you run Windows 7 with UAC (User Account Control) engaged? I also find myself wondering if maybe some tracks are frozen when you try to change styles.

An experiment that I'd try is to load in an all-MIDI style and see if the problem exists with that. Then I'd load in some styles with Realtracks for comparison.

Regards,
Noel

Hey Noel,

Thanks for the replies. I'll have to give this a shot later. I'll post how things went. It drives me crazy when my software gets wonky, after everything was working so smoothly in the past.

P.S. Yeah, you're right. I have lots of HD space. The easy comment is always to say "upgrade your hardware"... I think I'm OK in that department.

Glen,

Something that I forgot to mention in my post about factory settings is that it's necessary to restart BIAB after you perform the operation (I tend to reboot the whole computer just to make sure that all the memories are cleared).

Good luck,
Noel

Hi Glen,

I would re-download update 299 and install it - sometimes downloads can be faulty or incomplete

I was just getting ready to suggest the same thing as Brian did.

Sometimes the download can get corrupted, good idea to try re-downloading and reinstalling the update.

Sometimes it is necessary to clear your browser cache first, or it may just grab the original corrupted download file and tell you it did it again.

Glen, when you re-install the 299 download, make sure your virus-checking software is off.

I also have Windows 7 Pro 64-bit. What is your User Account Control setting? Try setting it at Never as an experiment and see if that changes the results with the StyleMaker. Control Panel, System Security, under Action Center.

Hello Glen,

This is a permissions problem, where Band-in-a-Box doesn't have permission to change/delete some files in it's folder or perform some other task. Some of the relevant things to know are... (1) where you are running Band-in-a-Box from (where it is installed), (2) whether you are an administrator or standard user, and (3) whether you have User Account Control enabled (any level) or disabled.

Depending on what exactly is causing the problem, there are various solutions. But it can almost certainly be fixed by turning off UAC. If you don't want to do that, then you could run the program with elevated privileges by right-clicking on it and selecting Run as admin. You can also turn that on permanently by right-clicking on the bbw.exe | Properties | Compatibility. If you have UAC enabled and have BB installed in the Program Files folder, you might consider moving your bb folder somewhere other than Program Files (just to make sure that's not what the problem is... When UAC is enabled, programs in this folder get treated differently).

Thanks guys for all your suggestions. Matt and Andrew nailed it. I re-installed the update4 file as is, shut UAC totally off and re-ran the update. Things started working as they had in the past. Stylepicker updated and rebuilt itself properly. I'm kicking myself for not thinking of this. Something happened over the last while to cause me to turn UAC back on. Doh! I had it off in the past.

Thanks all! Issue closed.

The best thing here is that you posted the results, so we can all help the next person. Good going.

As a general rule, In Windows 7 I set UAC on the next-to-lowest level, unless I am installing software manually, in which case I turn it off. During installs of most software, I tell the installer to Run as Administrator. Then, when done, I turn UAC back on, but only on the lowest active level. I'm not worried about what I might do; I only keep it on in case something tries to do something to me!
