Hi, Any suggestions for a pocket size player for BIAB (ie MP3) that can show a basic chord/melody line on screen when the tune is playing AND how to do it? Thanks, Werner

I don't know anything smaller than a netbook PC. My Toshiba NB205 runs BIAB fine, and the battery can last up to eight hours. However, even on a netbook with the 10" screen, it is still hard to see much of what is happening with BIAB. I can't imagine going any smaller and still read it.
BIAB 2025 Win Audiophile. Software: Studio One 7 Pro, Swam horns, Acoustica-7, Notion 6, Song Master Pro, Win 11 Home. Hardware: Intel i9, 32 Gb; Presonus 192 & Faderport 8, Royer 121, Slate VSX, Adam Sub8 & Neumann 120 monitors.

Hi Matt, I was thinking of something like an MP3 player that would show notation on the screen, not to read along ,but as an aid. I know Ipod will allow "art" to be added to the screen for each tune.(but I dont like Itunes) I've used my 10' laptop on gigs and the eyes get tested reading off the screen! I want to pop the player in my trumpet case and travel LIGHT I know I could just print some A5 or A6 charts but I think it would be great to have 1 gadget to slip into my pocket that plays and a quick glance at chords/notation before playing to refresh the old brain! The resolution on some of the newer screens looks good(...And as backup to the PC when necessary)) Thanks, Werner

Hi Werner (sounds german),
there are a lot of MP3-Player with a display like Sandisk Sansa, Creative Zen or Sony Walkman. They all show album cover stored in the Id3-Tags. You should replace the standard album cover with your own jpeg-files by using a ID3 tagging-sofware. Use MS Paint or a graphic suit and “paint” a white cover with the chordsheet in black. Save it as jpeg.

My friend has the small Kindle and we loaded a lead sheet on it. Not bad but a bit difficult to read. There is a larger 10" version but have never tried it. I think the Kindles can also hold mp3 files but can't vouch for the quality of sound.

I know a guitarist that has some iPhone app that loads the entire RealBook collection as graphics of the charts for that "remind me" purpose. No music on his to go with it that I know of, but there might be a way for it to do that also, dunno.
Apparently the iPhone screen is good enough for him to grab the chords and melody from those fake sheets. Younger eyes than mine, he has.

Speaking of the ireal app. I was surprised a couple of weeks ago when a guitarist and the bass player both placed their iPhones on the stand to read a tune that I'd called. I was too far away to be be able to read the screen but they seemed to be doing just fine. We did run into a bit of a problem later when we found out the bass player had transposed one of the tunes he'd done with a singer at a prior gig.
Of the Kindle. You can buy the Hal Leonard Real books for the KIndle. I haven't seen anyone use one yet. I'm trying to hold out on buying an e-reader myself till the 2nd generation iPad comes out.
The harder I work the luckier I get.

Hi Ralf, Yes. German mother, australian accent, live in Hong Kong! Any "simple " suggestions to turn a BIAB leadsheet into a .jpeg? (or is that what you have explained?) Thanks, Werner

Hi Werner, a BIAB chordsheet with lines and chords won’t fit into a album cover art jpg. Mp3 players usually have a small screen resolution, so the covers are 200x200 pixel or so. And BIAB can’t save chordsheet to jpg.
You have to use Windows Paint or something like that. Suggestion: Use MS Word, write down the chords in a large font, then save a screen snapshot to jpg. Windows 7 brings the “snipping tool” to do this.

BIAB can print chordsheets to jpg. Put up the leadsheet window, click the button at the very bottom left, and then find where you choose your format.
You can also download and install as a printer lots of different pdf formats I use primo.pdf and it installs as a printer, and you end up with a nice pdf of your file.
supported are jpg files, bmp files, tiff and png files, and you can specify the size you want.
There are so many features one should ask before deciding that band in a box can't do it. Some of us have been around the block way more than once.

You live and learn ... Thanks John. I'd previously never visited this useful print preview dialog in the leedsheet window. Beautiful jewels sparkle in the dark there ... Ralf

The Adam Notion Ink will feature outdoor lighting capable screen as well as the standard LCD. Nice size screen. The Asus eeePad is also coming out. So some interesting units will be soon available.

Band in a Box tweaked to run on one of those Win 7 E pad's would make for the most killer app imaginable. I almost wet my depends thinking about it.
I now want to live to see 2011 badly. It depends on a couple of things, hard drive size, I read only 1 USB port, don't know if it will run a hub from off the one port, and total avail. memory.
Are they running a 64 bit Win 7?

if I recall the specs for one of the models was Win7 but I believe 32 bit, the second spec was actually their new Windows for Embedded Devices i.e. the next Generation CE , don't know what support they will have for standard Win apps.
I believe I recall 2 gbs mem but I''ve been researching the space for a bit , HP a model as well, MSI etc, The USB port should be an active port i.e. you should be able to run a hub from it and also some of these units come with docking ports that allow for expansion, a lot will happen by the end of 2010 going into 2011.

John,
When you made pdf file of BIAB, you can not show it correctly on a pc which has no PGmusic product because of PGmusic protected fonts. Protected fonts could not be embedded in the pdf file.
Do you have any solution for this problem?

mitz

Werner asked for a small Mp3 player with display that can show a basic chord/melody line on its screen. I think, using MP3 album cover graphic could be a solution. Album covers are stored in the ID3-Tag of a MP3-file. Son create a cover with basic song information, showed on the players display when playing the MP3. There are several ways to do this. Created with MS Paint: Created with BIAB, using chordsheet->Preview->save as jpg dialog: Ralf

that shouldn't (or perhaps I should say, "couldn't"... ) happen with a true .pdf file at all.
.pdf treats the screengrab as a GRAPHIC. After the .pdf has been created, the file has no need to access system fonts at all to view it.
At least, that's the way it has always worked for me, there might be something toggled somewhere in your .pdf creator software that could do that, don't know. But it would certainly defeat the purpose of the .pdf format...

It just works for me. I use primo.pdf. It's free and has always worked. The issue of a font I remember in older versions of pdf from Adobe we had that at work but a single user licence, although useful for making high end forms and allowing feedback etc. is beyond my retirement budget.
We used to make exams using the Adobe software, and have student id's entered, the exam done in multiple choice or T/F, and the results emailed back to our office on training CD's. It worked well, but I remember during development we had a laptop that we could bring home and I think I ran into that when trying to do leadsheets.
Once I'm unhooked from my feeding tube apparatus in a hour I'll try it on the system downstairs. For now my electronic machine is giving me 'breakfast'. LOL.
And I'm watching Portugal dismember the N. Korean side in methodical fashion, it's a clinic wiith 15 minutes to go. I do not like them much but if you asked me for a bet I'd have to go with them or Brasil.
