Hi all

I have been using BIB for sometime with sampletank as the dxi. I decided to go ahead and hook up one of my midi keyboards to write a melody track, but can't seem to get it to work. I know the interface and the keyboard works, because i can lauch sampletank as a standalone and it works. After installing updates, I was able to successfully to select the interface (tascam 122) successfully. When I do get sounds, it seems to be coming from the internal sound card rather than ST. Yes, I do have the channels set up. The discussion on the melody track does seem a bit confusing, as I don't seem to be able to make it go colored, either. This may be too difficult to get an answer here, but I thought I would try before calling...Thanks!

It may have to do with the "Route MIDI Thru..." checkbox below the MIDI Output window...

hmmm..didn't see this before:

For real-time MIDI thru to a DXi/VSTi synth using ASIO, look in the Audio Settings dialog (Opt. | Preferences | Audio), click the [Audio Drivers] button, and in the "ASIO Audio Drivers" dialog make sure that the "ASIO Always On" checkbox is ON.

The choice whether to run ASIO all the time, or just when BIAB is playing/recording, is offered in case anyone has problems running ASIO constantly. If ASIO is not always on, BIAB will route MIDI thru to your default MIDI destination (such as the MS GS Wavetable, Creative Soundcard synth, hardware MIDI synth, etc). This is to minimize playthru latency when ASIO is not always on, and it is the way MIDI Thru behaves with MME high-latency drivers as well

I still can't find out what the midi through might be doing....

Okay, here it is in plain laymen's English:

When "Use DXi" is checked and the "Route MIDI Thru to..." is also checked, the Thru track of BiaB, which is the track your keyboard connects to, is set to bypass the DXi synth and instead send the MIDI Output from the Thru track and channel directly to whatever you have highlighted as MIDI choice in the upper MIDI Output window, which is not for DXi choices.

This is very handy, especially if your keyboard has built in sounds, you can highlight the physical MIDI output in the upper window and when theh Use DXi is checked whatever you play on the keyboard gets routed to the keyboard's internal hardware synth. Or, you might have one of the older non-DXi software synths highlighted there, in which case the keyboard is routed to there instead of the DXi synth.

I have found that use of ASIO sound drivers (or the ASIO4ALL converter for built in soundcards) plus DXi synth with the "Route to Thru" UNchecked works fine here for playing in realtime. I like the sounds of the VSC DXi and the only trouble I have is occasionally when I first start up BiaB I can't hear the keyboard when I play it until I first hit Play and then Stop. After that, I can play the keyboard whether or not BiaB is playing.

It works.

Just usually takes a bit of shakedown time and learning and setting those controls and drivers to the right settings.
