Since installing 2010.5 my midi through won't play unless the song is playing. While I can hit the keyboard and see the notes...or use the mouse to hit the notes on the keyboard, no sound comes out.
I'm using the VST/DXI synth and I've tried every configuration from ASIO to MME. I;ve checked and unchecked run mid thru through midi driver.... I've also gone through all the options in the midi thru box. Never had this problem before...I'm guessing it might be some kind of "operator error" , but I'm stumped and don't understand if I can see the notes play on the keyboard in BIAB, why I can't hear them.
By the way when I switch to Sonar.... I hear my keyboard without any problems.....This is driving me crazy... Any help is appreciated

Deacon,
Uncheck use DXi synth box, set driver back to MME instead of ASIO, then select your midi input/output driver to your keyboard. If you are using a USB midi device, select that as in/out driver. The sound should then be coming out of your keyboard, if properly connected and routed.
Once you have recorded your midi notes, go back and select use DXi synth for the playback sounds.
Also, you can go to opt/pref/channels in Biab to see which channel the thru is currently set to.

I believe he's trying to play the DXi with his keyboard as a controller. In this case he needs to use ASIO. As far as not hearing anything unless the song is playing; It's always been that way. I no longer have a keyboard however I don't think anything has changed in that respect.

Thanks for the suggestions, but in all other previous versions I have been able to hear my keyboard controller( I'm using an old korg m-1) when the program was open and nothing was playing....
It works that way in Real Band , in otherwords, I hear the keyboard when i hit the notes once I open the program.... and I have the same setting I have in BIAB, where there is no sound....
In real Band I am using ASIO, I have VST/DXI checked in midi through... and I am using USB cables as my midi connectors....
Somewhere in the program there is something wrong... but I can't figure it out.... I'm not a newbie... I have had BIAB since version 1, but as I said in my first post...I'm stumped.

Don't ever recall it working that way as of 2 years ago. The song always had to be playing. There may be some details I'm not remembering. Hopefully someone can help out.

I can confirm that in build 303, before ever hitting "play", my external controller plays the loaded DXi, TTS-1 in my case (albeit with significant latency, which is not an issue for me since I don't do real time external control with this configuration.) FWIW, the audio driver is ASIO4All, "ASIO always on is enabled", "route midi thru to midi driver" is unchecked, the three midi thru options in the midi options window are enabled, and I'm running under Win7x64.
The problem you describe has occurred here intermittently over the years. I've always gotten it to go away, but can't recall exactly how. FWIW, some thoughts:
1) Ensure "asio always on" is enabled.
2) I don't think you said which VST/Dxi you've loaded. Try triggering it from its own interface to make sure it plays. One thing I've found with the TTS-1 is that if it receives bank controllers not within its midi implementation, the voice on that channel can get "stuck" in limbo. It won't play, and it won't respond to further patch/bank changes. I've found I can unstick it by manually resetting it to a valid patch from within the TTS-1 interface itself. Perhaps something like this has happened?
3) Use the midi monitor to make sure the output from your controller is actually reaching BB, and that the channel/patch data etc. have the desired values. (In the display filter for the monitor, don't forget to enable computer midi input.)
4) If using ASIO, ensure that there's no other app making a demand on it (even if ASIO always on is enabled.)
Post back if issue remains. If no further insight on the forum, a support call might be in order.
Good luck. -Ron
EDIT - Understood from your OP, you've already tried some of these approaches. Sorry, just wanted to put all thoughts in one place.

This might be an obvious suggestion but I suddenly stopped being able to play midi thru from keyboard to Forte DXi and it drove me mad until I found the solution. I was trying to play with a song that I had saved with the thru channel deselected in "Save+" so thru was muted for that song even though the thru channel at the top of the screen didn't show red.

Deacon,
First: See if it records midi data without DXi & Asio.
This is the Biab forum, I assumed you were attempting this in Biab.
Make sure you have the midi in/output routed correctly in RB and have the proper midi device selected in driver menu.
In RB, set the channel PORT (r-click far left of track to select) to your midi device & set which midi channel your keyboard is sending to the RB track. Try recording something. See if you get ANY midi data recorded at all to the track you have selected.

I was using 2010 then 2010.5 and a fresh install and the thru works fine with he ketron from my keyboard using a usb generic midi device and my Roland keyboard and Windows 7 home. No issues.

John Conley, Hope you're getting along OK. There are two setups for the thru. You can play a hardware synth as you are using the midi output driver or you can play a DXi/VSTi. Does the song need to be playing for one of these circumstances? If the answer is no do you remember when this requirement went away?

I just performed an experiment here, with my 2010.5 build 303 BiaB.
Changed to "Use DXi" with the VSC DXi synth.
ASIO drivers were already invoked, with "ASIO Always On" checked.
"Route MIDI Thru..." UNchecked.
When I closed the window, I could see the onscreen keyboard highlight notes played on my MIDI Controller Keyboard, but could not hear them.
Pressed Play and let the song load, then hit Stop.
I could now hear the keyboard playing trhough the VSC DXi.
Tried closing and reopening BiaB, the Controller Keyboard would Immediately allow playing on the Thru channel as soon as BiaB was done opening.
Rebooted the computer (yeah, long wait, but...) and reopened BiaB, after it settled down I could again play the MIDi keyboard thru the DXi synth immediately.
Somtehing's going on if you cna't hear that thing, but I'm not sure what it could be at this point...

I tried it with route through mid dirver both checked and un checked and it played when the song was playing...but once I hit stop, I could see the notes on the keyboard on the upper panel, but can't hear a thing....I know I've always been able to play and here my thru channel...but something isn;t working...
What;s even more puzzling, when I load Real Tracks, the thru channel plays with no problem.... this is really driving me crazy.....Peter...someone at BIAB HELP!!!!!!

I am glad you got it working. Seems Biab/RB need the "play" button pressed to kick-in the DXi/Vsti now.

OK so I was right about it not working. It's the "ASIO always on" that made it always work.

No it just works. No asio. But I'm going thru to the Ketron, not a soft synth.
I'm making, for now, a comeback. Have some voice.....

But if someone is using ASIO drivers, for certain specific soundcards, the ASIO Always On needs to be checked.

This comment isn't worth much but I finally remembered with the help of my friend what I was remembering. It's the thru HARMONY that doesn't sound until the song is started. For obvious reasons.
