I have a melody which starts with 3 quarter note triplets followed a half note which was notated in Sibelius and exported as midi. Upon loading into BIAB it converts them to 2 eights followed by a quarter followed a half note which is not quite the same. These are quarter note triplets , there's no fuzzing , they were notated. What can I do to have BIAB recognize them as such ?

thanks

Hi Charles,

I haven't always been successful with getting BIAB notation to work with 1/4 note triplets. If you go to notation mode, Opt (on the left side at the top of the staff), you can set "Triplet Resolution": on the upper right corner of the dialogue box. It also helps to select a swing STY file.

To be honest, I never worry too much about the notation, though, because BIAB always plays triplets correctly and that's what is important to me. If you are after the notation, it might be best for you to print it from Sibelius. If you are after the performance rather than notation, BIAB will do it fine. When I enter 1/4 note triplets, I always use the piano roll mode and the the "snap" and "duration" options. These work a treat.

Regards,
Noel

Importing quarter note triplets from Sibelius or Finale has always printed differently for me in BiaB/PT. But I have found that a bit of editing to the target bar once the piece is opened in the pgmusic program will result in having the desired printout.

From the FAQ page:

Quote:

25. How do I display 'Swing' notation (triplets) and 'Even feel' notation (sixteenths) in the same song? How do I enter quarter note triplets?

You can toggle between Swing and Even feel notation by enabling/disabling 'Triplet Resolution' in the Notation Window Options dialog. Alternatively, you can change the resolution for any beat individually by doing the following:

In the Notation Window, activate 'editable notation mode' by pressing the [N] button once. You should see groups of vertical dashed lines.

Right-click on the time indicator line above the beat that you want to change. This will bring up the Beat Resolution dialog. The time indicator line is the narrow horizontal space above the lyric entry area; it contains a little black cursor that shows the current position of your song.

In the Beat Resolution dialog, set the number of beats to 3 if you are in an even feel style and want triplets, or 4 if you are in a triplet style and want sixteenths.

Assuming that you are in triplet resolution, you can insert an eighth note triplet by placing notes on three consecutive dashed lines. For quarter note triplets, place a note on every second dashed line. Note that while your music will always play the way you input it, you may not always be able to get triplets to display exactly how you want. This a limitation of the Band-in-a-Box notation display.

If you find that a quarter note triplet you have entered does not display with the proper triplet notation (ie 3 quarter notes with a '3' over top of them), note that:

In the Notation Window Options dialog, the "Tick Offset" setting can be used to adjust how the notes are displayed. Try setting this to zero; this may allow your triplet to be displayed properly.

Quarter note triplet display will not work as well if you are using an even feel style and are changing an individual beat to triplet feel. It works better if the overall feel of the style is a triplet feel.

Quarter note triplets will never display properly if they span beats 2 and 3 in any measure.

I must add that I have had a few instances where I couldn't get those darn quarter note triplets to display in BB properly no matter what I tried. In my case, since what I wanted was printed charts to pass out, I finally resorted to whiteout, pencil and copy machine to get the desired result.

thanks all, I was concerned that it was quantizing it but it sounded right, I then coincidentally confirmed that it was correct once I exported the entire midi mix from BIAB and loaded that into Sibelius and noted that the notation for the melody was correct i.e. un-changed. I also prefer seeing the correct notes notated as I watch the BIAB score scroll thru but I can live with that.

thanks for the feedback.

They have never been able to fix the quarter note triplet problem in the notation view, or adding them manually?
