I just want to get some other ears on this: http://blog.monteirosfusion.com/wp-conte...-Stereo-Out.mp3What do you all think of the groove in the context of latin jazz ? How about in the context of hard core straight salsa ? I on purpose wanted to juxtapose the percussion, in particular the clave against the bass line. I'm looking for some constructive feedback. What's not working. thanks in advance for the feedback.

I liked this!
I find it fascinating to listen to the clave variations. The instrument is not "trapped" like usual, but your pattern is reasonably consistent.
Of course, that still means the clave police might come after you. It feels closest to a 2 - 3 clave pattern, without the third beat in the 3 part. This is sort of like saying, "I think I'll go to the".
The thing that will probably drive some purists up the wall the most is the first part - the 2 part, with three quick beats including that beat on beat 1 that is normally silent. That might be disconcerting to a "straight" Latin player, but I love the hybrid stuff so I'm not a good judge.
The bass is fine, very straightforward samba pattern; nothing to comment on there.
I thought your pattern was a lot of fun to listen to and would be very solid to blow over.

Did you do this in the Bands-in-a-Box?
If so I'd like to know how. Cool groove!

I agree with what Matt said.
The purists may complain, but to my ears, it works.

Hi Charles, I though it sounded pretty good although I would have made the timbales "repique" a little louder if possible, sometimes it gets a little lost in the mix. The 2, pause, 3 beats (which sounded to me like a "guiro", contrary to what many believes is a pretty common variation of the clave beat. I have the same question; was that an RT salsa drum style?

it definitely was at least largely based on BIAB not RT drum style, don't remember if I had tweaked that at all as I will do. However, the reason for the opinion request was that I have a hard core Jazz pro friend and he was not digging it. He's more bebop and standards i.e. his latin interpretations are always "jazz" based, therefore I thought I get some other opinions.
thanks for the feedback,
-Charles

Charles,
In my experience, if it sounds good it IS good.
And if some of the other musicians complain, it is usually because you are doing something different and new - at least to them - and is often a sign that you are on the right track.
History shows us that back when Diz and Bird were busy experimenting and inventing Bebop, the musicians around them harped, moaned and complained about it as well **grin**
Of course, if whatever innovation you come up with manages to "catch on" - then all too soon those same musicians will be telling you how to do it!
Human nature, I guess.
But I kinda dug the groove, and as Matt already said, I could jam to it.

perhaps that was it, basically by friend felt that the extra busy-ness watered down the groove. Mac, I agree on your reflection of human nature. Writing something that feels/sounds good to one's ear drives one's creativity and carries you usually further towards some sort of output. When I try to do something more formal , it always seems to come out weaker, stranger although I think these are valid exercises as well. I'm a guitarist and although I have some background in music theory etc , I'm most used to coming out with stuff as a result of improvisation, often that leads to busier stuff , so I have to sit back. The idea of melody first is still a hard thing for me, lamentably I often get line ideas in my head also. I'm particularly week in harmonizing and especially in the context of imposing a genre or fusion of genre's. I do better with grooves and pre-set progressions , anyhow I digress. I did want to do something with that groove but I still waver a lot and I guess opinions do influence me. I should just crank out material clobber idea segments together into some sort of semi-unified package i.e. a song, and let things be what they are, after doing a zillion of these , maybe I'll get it together .
