this song Ive written is doing some weird things and would like to know if anyone has had this problem before.Ive panned the guitars fully left/right (its the same guitar on both channels).Then at points in the song it seems they appear in the middle.Ive solo'd both guitars and it doesnt happen but if I play both together then it does.Does anyone know why this happens.Cheers Frank

Hi Frank,
When this has happened to me, it's because that bar, or section of a bar, has an identically generated section of Realtrack on each channel. Others who are more experienced with sound recording than I am will probably comment on this but it seems to my ears that as long as the sounds are slightly different on each channel, the ear hears stereo. When, however, the sound is identical on each channel, the ear hears it as mono and in the center position. To solve this, I take my song into Realband, generate a 3rd track of the same instrument and then copy and paste from the 3rd track into the offending section of one of the tracks.

Um. Same part panned hard left and hard right is what's called BIG MONO. It's going to sound like it's in the middle.

not really.As I explained for most of the song its a stereo effect and sounds great then at certain bars it centres in the middle.Even if its just panned 45 -45 for each guitar it still tends to at those bars to form in the centre.Frankie

Depending on where in time you paste it (grin). Paste it out of sync a hair and it makes a huge difference..
Even then, phasing can make it seem to jump toward center occasionally.
The L/R exact copies of tracks appearing centered, reminds me of how reversing a files 'polarity' and playing both versions at the same time can make absolute silence!
Use Audacity to flip a file and it will sound pretty much the same.
Then open that file and the original in RB on two separate tracks..if you get the volumes to match they will cancel each other (if they both are centered). You can actually use the volume or panning to control the amount of cancellation .
Funny how sound works.

Nothing more than a postive-going voltage being cancelled by an identical negative-going voltage.
In the Digital domain, think of it as each sample being an integer, which it is.
One integer is positive, the other is the same integer but negative.
+1 plus -1 equals zero

'zactly  So an exact signal from Left & Right will indeed sound centered (same peaks hitting both ears at the same time). But throw that positive/negative off just a little bit.. and its a whole 'nother animal. Sounds much more stereo.. just throw the timing off a hair. Positive/negative arriving to the ear at different times. I guess my point was that if the original poster wanted a stereo 'sound' from two of the exact same tracks panned L/R, throwing the timing off a tiny bit *may* help.

thnks Rharv and Mac. I cant understand why the stereo effect is there through most of the song but not at certain bars.Ive even asked this question over on home recording and they all say the same thing panning L/right will introduce mono.Ive done quite a bit of recording here in my studio and have many times used panning for a stereo effect especially when I record accoustic guitars and never had any problem.I am surprised that I havent had an answer yet that solves my problem Oh well back to the drawing board.Frankie

Did you ever listen to just one of the two panned tracks to see if it stayed left or right only during playback? If so, then it seems to me that the two generated tracks had identical parts at times. Glad the timing trick worked for you - I'll keep that one in mind for future reference.

Hi Barry,I listened to both the tracks individually and they stayed panned but when I then listened to the 2 of them together and muted the rest of the other instruments they againl moved to the centre at certain bars in the track.Frankie.. oh! and just in case it was a lead problem going to my ext.speakers I listened through my head phones and it still did the same thing

It's all to do with how the brain interprets the sound it hears. The field of study is called Psychoacoustics. When two identical sounds at identical volumes are played at locations equally placed at left and right of center, the brain hears that as straight ahead because that is the location that a natural, external sound has to be when it registers the same in both ears (this is how we identify the position of noises). That is, the ears have been "fooled". It's much the same idea as fooling the eyes with visual illusions.

Hi Noel,Ive got a studio here in the Uk and have often recorded a guitar in different channels and then panned them left and right and have never experienced that problem before so Im not sure if its that long word you used.Ive done the same thing with other instruments and no problem.But as you say Rharv seemed to have sorted it with the timing .Cheers Frankie
