Help! I know I am just doing something wrong, but can't figure out what. If I try to regenerate a portion of an existing solo or add a new solo to a different region, the old solo regions don't play back, but they still show up in the notation window. I have tried all combinations of freezing/unfreezing soloist, write over existing overlapping solo, etc. Nothing seems to work.

Thank you!

Hello mcube,

Since I don't know exactly what you are doing, here's what I did to test it out. Let us know what you are doing differently...

1. Went to File-New and set the song to 1 chorus.
2. Clicked on the Soloist button, selected a Soloist and pressed the Custom... button.
3. In the 'Generate solo for range of bars' dialog box, set it to generate "Bar 1, Chorus 1, 4 bars long", and pressed Generate Solo Now.
4. Heard it play the solo for the first four bars.
5. Pressed the Soloist button again, selected a different Soloist, and pressed the Custom button again.
6. Set it to Bar 9, Chorus 1, 4 bars long. Generate Solo Now. The song plays correctly, with my first solo in 1-4 and the second one in 9-12.

mcubed,

Are you working with midi soloists or Realtrack ones?

In my Windows version of BIAB, I have noticed that midi soloists behave exactly as Andrew has described them. Realtrack soloists, on the other hand, can only have one instance in a song. If I tried to do what Andrew describes above, the second generation would clear the first one. (This might be different on Macs.) I use Realband to add multiple instances of Realtrack solos.

Regards,
Noel

Hi Andrew, Thanks very much for replying.

If I open a new song with all of the standard defaults, but only change the number of choruses to 1, then choose style #1 (bebop sax), everything works fine. I can generate new portions of a previously generated solo and the old portions play back correctly.

But, if I do the same thing, but choose realtracks style 618 (background fiddle), any solo I previously generated doesn't play back, but does show up in the notation window. If I save and re-open the same song, I still only get play back of the last solo I generated.

I am using a new MacBook Pro with system 10.6.3.

BTW, I have used BIAB for many years and it is one of my favorite all time Mac programs.

Hi Noel96, I wrote my reply to Andrew before I saw your post.

I am observing the same thing you describe, realtracks can only be used in a single section of a song as part of a solo.

Hello,

Oh - yes, there can only be one RealTrack per track at present. You might be able to accomplish what you want by using more than one track. You can actually put a RealTracks Soloist on any track - it doesn't *need* to be on the Soloist track. Instead of going through the soloist dialog, you would just control+click on the track and add it that way.

For example, say you want three different solo's - one at bar 1-4, the second at bar 5-8, and the third at bar 9-12. You could assign the different RealTracks soloists to three different available tracks, say the Soloist, Strings, and Guitar tracks (assuming you have some free tracks in your song). Then, use the F5 bar settings to mute all but one of the soloists for bar1-4, all but the second soloist for bars 5-8, and so on.

The other way to do it would be to generate the three different solos, and then export them and combine in a third party program.

Thanks Andrew, I am following your last suggestion and it works fine and isn't even really that inconvenient.
