Hey, gang. I'm very sorry I haven't been around much this year. Nothing's really wrong -- I've been busy for all the right reasons, going hither and yon across the country and almost making money -- and I lurk every once in awhile, and haven't kicked in much because there didn't seem to be much to say. Just today, though, I was feeling a bit melancholy, and I thought I'd drop in, and I brightened right up when I saw all of your names. I hope you're all doing well...?

Hugs all around,
Tom

Tom Smith

Filk sent me to the online dictionary. I guess that due to the fact that I won't read anything unless it seems 100 percent real, I've not found that genre. My idea of Sci Fi music is Holst. Oh well....

Get it done Tom! Whatever that is. Who knows about tomorrow. I found that out the hard way.

Tom, most of us here are walking wounded, so welcome back and whistle along with the rest as we head for the sunny uplands! It's all about the journey and the companions, not the destination.

rharv -- not so bad, ace, not to bad. Health could be better (overall fine, it's the small stuff that adds up), money could definitely be better, but I'm hangin' in. And, dude! This very weekend I'm at a convention in Romulus, just north of Metro Airport, about 1-1/2 hours down the I-94 from you. If'n you're interested.

jford -- always, m'friend. Although not as much this summer, I've been busier than a one-legged etc. But a few things, including one new just this past Friday.

Mac -- {big damn manly hugs} I gotta give you a call, man.

John -- Actually, I feel the same way. I point to The Magic Flute and The Ring Cycle as prime examples of filk: music influenced by science fiction or fantasy. And if Peter Schilling's "Major Tom" isn't a filk of David Bowie's "Space Oddity", what the heck is it?

What it really comes down to is two nouns and a verb -- a genre of music influenced by, or just liked by fans of, sf/f, and the community of musicians and fans who write, perform, and listen to it; and the act of creating a song about something, by either parodying another song lyrically (but keeping the music) or coming up with something new on the subject. Puns are often involved.

Danny -- damn almost skippy.

Skyline -- got that right. Which is why I'm back. Like I said, I missed you guys. Dunno how often I'll be around, although likely more so as the winter moves in, but I'm always thinking about you, and still using BIAB as a primary (along with Acid Pro and Reaper).

Best,
Tom Smith

PM me the specifics. If I came it would be just to see you; the organization isn't something that interests me. Nothing personal meant by that of course, just haven't developed the appreciation for sci-fi that a lot of people have. So much reality to contend with. Glad you're making ends meet and still in the area, that is an accomplshment in itself these days.

Nothing to PM. I have a concert Saturday at 1:30. And it's not much of an "organization" (although the people who run it certainly are organized). SF/F cons are more like weekend parties with special guests, gatherings for friends and chosen family with way more stuff to do if you want to. (I emphasize that because some of the best times I've had at cons involve sitting around talking to friends I haven't seen for awhile.) There are other concerts, a nice dealer's room (books, toys, jewelry, T-shirts, music CDs, etc.), an art show, various author panels, a Con Suite with free drinks and snacks, a video room... all kindsa stuff.

Tom Smith

Show time was the crucial piece
Thanks

I can have fun anywhere , but with wife and kids the scheduling becomes the challenge.

I'd have trouble getting past Port Huron customs in the Darth Vader suit. I breath like that though. I still have the wallet card that says this person will set off radiation detection devices due to isotope in the dope. (No kidding there). And I probably glow in the dark after the 35 radiation doses. Hm.......nah, don't want to get locked up..no sense of fun or humour anymore at the border. I understand the guy in the Shriner's Oriental band being a target dressed in beards and robes with curly shoes and Arab headgear, but dang the Drum and Bugle Corps...we are almost harmless...except we got caught playing our trumpets in the swimmin' pool in Leamington ..um naked at 3 a.m. The cops just laughed. I swear I hardly drank at all........

jford -- hee hee.

John C -- Well, next time I come up to Stratford, maybe we should work something out. Already saw two plays this year, and I might make the trip just because I love some of the restaurants.

Sometimes when the weather is nice a drive to Stratford is the ticket. Good plays this year.

Aha! I'm glad I checked. Turns out my concert Saturday is at 3:00 p.m., not 1:30. Mind you, Juanita Coulson, the Grand Dame of Filk, is on at 1:30, and she's a unique and wonderful performer.

My daughter has a performance in Grand Blanc Saturday afternoon so it going to depend on whether she can get a ride. Not quite legally old enough to drive herself yet.. few more weeks. Wife will be out of town, so otherwise it would play out nicely.
