This looks like a potentially really useful tool, for performance and/or practice. It's just getting off the ground, and I am installing it on my Droid smartphone, only $6 bucks. Should work well with BIAB, and all the new Apple and Droid tablet computers and ereaders popping up in the near future. 900 built-in leadsheets, and lots of additions from the user base.
From the web site (www.irealbook.net) "iReal Book is an app for iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android that contains a collection of hundreds of chord charts of jazz standards, jazz classics, latin, brazilian, pop classics and more."

The power of selling something for a 'small' price, hoping it gets taken 1 million times. Of course the "Realbook" is, and has been, available,, (right or wrong) from back rooms for various prices sometimes well organized, other times badly photocopied. Now versions of it for free, for profit and as a scam float about cyber-space. For me, the only time I might spend $6 to acquire this was if it was 'portable' and 'useful'. The latter is subjective however. I cannot see it being useful on a blackberry, which I have but plan to retire as I have informed my former clients that I no longer am working as a consultant. For what it's worth, here's a link to the real book in band in a box format. I have no association with this thing, nor do I condone copyright infringement. This link provides 'realbook' in band in a box format, free.... http://phillipsmusic.net/realbook.htmFWIW.

I'm a singer/guitarist, and I've been using iReal Book in live settings as of late.
Initially, it was an experiment, but it has turned out to be a very positive experience. In particular, the iOS version's "Player" feature has given me a lot more options, and I have some upcoming "jazz standards" gigs where my iPad may serve as my only backup.
For my "normal" shows, I play everything from Sinatra to Sabbath, so I haul around a computer rig with close to 200 hand-sequenced midi songs, feeding into racks of virtual drums, synths, and samplers, plus a virtual guitar rig and a soft processor chain for my vocals.
But for these impending jazz gigs, I will probably leave the "big rig" at home and just do a basic "jazz quartet + vocal" sound using the iPad, a guitar, and my voice.
Of course, BiaB is my go-to for songwriting/arranging, but this iReal Book app makes a great addition to my arsenal.
As a side note, it is my understanding that since the iReal Book software and library is limited to chord charts only, that there are no copyright violations.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Hi, EightString: Yes, I believe this is all aboveboard as far as copyright goes. And yes, your usage is exactly what I had in mind. I posted this tip because there have been quite a few long threads lately from people looking for two kinds of help: 1. Help with access and portability of charts/music, especially for gigs. 2. Help with learning tunes. Of course, we all know how useful the Real Book has been... I have been using it for years. Also, as John points out, the Phillips website is invaluable, especially if you're using it with BB. I had in mind those uses, like yours, where you don't want a huge load-in of gear, binders, or even laptops, etc. In my case, those gigs which involve only solo piano. I tried the app last night, setting my Droid Incredible on the music stand, and it was surprisingly easy to read (the phone has a great screen, even thought small). I am looking forward to the new tablet computers.....although I see that lots of folks are using laptops and even netbooks. Also, I am looking forward to using my smartphone to just study charts, when away from a keyboard. I doubt that PG Music will create a BB droid app, but who knows? Everybody seems to be piling on board. Enjoy, Daisy

Well, Daisy, you'll really start to have fun once the iReal Book folks have the player running on Android. And, you'll be able to turn the player's piano off to have have just the "live" jazz drums and upright to accompany you, if that's of interest.

I have it on my iphone and will have it on my ipad when I get it. I've used it on the gig a couple of times, mainly as a quick reference, and it's not as difficult as it may seem. It's really useful as a fast reference if you can't recall where a bridge goes and stuff like that. One feature I like is that it transposes to any key.

All you youngsters are losing me in the high tech world. The only thing I know about iphones is when I need to ask my wife something "I phone" home.
