I see the new feature of compressing the new rt's to 30% but does the new software go back over my old RT's (2010.5,2010,2009, etc)and enhance and compress them as well. I was uncertain about this.
Thanks Wyndham

Yes it does.

If you are concerned, please back them up first (as mentioned during the process) because this process permanently erases a lot of (now) unneeded files. I don't think it is undoable.

I saw over 100 gig of RT reduced to 30 gig or so. Very nice. And they are better in performance and sound! Tempos can be stretched farther than ever.

Unless you are using a fairly old system you should see marked improvement in sound and service with the new format. Only those with older XP systems (especially older laptops) may not notice an improvement as it does take a little more power to run the new format. Any system within the last few years should be fine though as far as I know.

YES, I got a huge amount of space back. My drive was at 95% full and it saved me from having to move stuff to other drives. And the tracks sound way better.

It says something about an option when you install to process the existing RTs to compress them

I see that the whole release is based on the new RT compression and stretch features, but absolutely nothing was done to make VST's work better, noting was done to add automation in RB, and the coyote Wt is still the only real choice for basic midi. While i love the new features for RTs I was hoping that better VSTi handling was coming so we could all use the excellent plugs we already have. I love RTs but sometimes you want to play midi tracks, and some synths do not work properly. You can not use RTs for every track. Especially if you do any cover work, some songs are great with your interpretation, but others require that it be more true to the original, and that requires midi tracks.

I will upgrade my system, but I am a bit disappointed. I want RB and PTPA to stand up to the other DAWs on the market, and they can't until they have real automation, mouse drawable not fader recording, that is similar to programs like even MC5 where you can add nodes and adjust volume and panning and even effects sends and such. Plus full on synth handling capability, without the problem of the timing code issues.

Anyway I do not want to sound like a jerk, I love the upgrades to the tempo stretching, it will be very helpful. And many of the other features will certainly be handy.

Are you referring to the standard (.wma) or audiophile (.wav) versions?

I used standard wma which makes it even more surprising.

How in heaven do you guys know so much about the this version, when it just launched several hours ago?

I am still trying to figure a way to approach wifey with the need for $140.

To my knowledge the audiophile version is not supposed to be compressed.

You can however have two locations for your stuff and run both and go back and forth, you just have to edit the locations inside the program.

That needs to be part of the faq for the new version.

Since I've been getting my yearly upgrades on DVD with RT's, those are my backups if needed.

We haven't addressed the audiophile version specifically yet, but I would say the "sounds better" description does apply to that as well, since what we're talking about is improved stretching algorithms when changing pitch and tempo. And yes, the audiophile version is not supposed to be compressed.

This is from the PG website:

We′ve made big improvements to the sounds of the RealTracks, so that they sound more natural over a much wider range of tempos with the élastique Pro V2 time stretching engine by zplane.development. These improvements are built-in, so there′s nothing you need to do to get them working. Your existing songs will just "sound better" over a much wider range of tempos. Please watch the demo videos for audio examples of the improvements.

Quite a few of us have been working quietly in the background with the new release as Beta Testers.

Please do not be confused. The new option to reduce the size of the RTs folder IS NOT DONE BY COMPRESSING THEM. The old engine had to have MANY files to generate at different tempos. If you've ever looked in the RTs folders you'd see a lot of files . labeled +/- 1. The new engine is WAY better at stretching so what is happening is that all of the unnecessary +/- files are erased. That's how space is gained. NO COMPRESSION.

Good info. I was wondering how they reduced the necessary drive space so much. Thought I'd missed a news release on some new super duper audio compression scheme.

The Audiophile version also shrinks by 70%, so that it is only 30% of the previous size.

Looks like the Audiophile version will also require less disk space.

What a brilliant lot these guys at PGMusic are!

Aubrey, I did not see quite that much size savings; mine was closer to a 60% saving. However, I did not have all the possible audiophile files on the drive upon which I ran the routine, only the ones in the jazz genres I use.

Thanks Matt,
70% would have been great but a 60% reduction will be more than adequate for me. I was expecting to have to upgrade my 2 terabyte hard drive within the next release or two of BIAB but now I will have acres of empty drive space for many years to come! This enhancement has come way out of left field for me and is both a surprise and a delight. Coupled with better tempo stretched audio quality AND the greater flexibility around changing realtrack styles within a song this is possibly the best value upgrade since back when realtracks were originally added. (and that's even before I get my head around multiple realtracks on a single BIAB track - can't wait to see how that works!)

I have ordered the Audiophile upgrade and so now I will be twiddling my thumbs in anticipation for the next few days until it arrives (I am guessing that PG have reverted to something smaller than the previous 1.5 terabyte drive for delivering the audiophile version?).

Best Regards, Aubrey
