I'm running 2010.5 with the 8" X 5" black external hard drive ( that came with the Audiophile version).
This was a much larger HD than the one issued in 2009. I don't know if its just the one I got, but every
time I turn it on, it makes a loud spinning noise, like somthing is loose or out of alignment in the
disks rotation. After 10-15 minutes, it settles down a bit, but still sounds not right for a HD.
I know there had been a bad run of them in 2009, and BIAB gave me a replacement. I don't know if anyone
had problems with their 2010.5 HD's, but rather than send it back, I would just get the 2011 upgrade, hoping
for a smoother running HD. Can anyone chime in on how the latest HDs have been operating?
I would be willing to pay more for BIAB, if you could have an option for the Audiophile version to
ship on a Seagate or somthing that runs a bit better.

I have copied my 2010 to a Seagate. I will overwrite it once I get my HD Ultrapak. Some of the drives I have received from PG will work on my laptop, but are not recognized by my desktop regardless of what ports I connect them to (and I have LOTS of USB ports, both motherboard-integrated and on PCIe cards.
I just consider the ones BIAB ships on as distribution media.

Thanks Jan, but how does that work with BIAB? Do you copy and paste into
the new HD or another command? Will that leave you with a new HD as the
everyday copy and the old HD as a backup?

Yes, you can just copy the entire contents of the drive to another drive.

Hello J8Stringer,
The noise is most likely the fan, maybe it's slightly out of alignment. We have new AudioPhile hard disk enclosures that are much quieter.

That's good news about the new audiophile drive enclosures.
In the past, I had one with a loose mounting screw from shipping. 30 seconds with a screwdriver fixed it.
The fans were relatively noisy, but I always take the drives out of the enclosures, anyway, and mount them in my machine to an empty SATA port. If you don't have that (such as in a HP or Dell stripped-down desktop), another possibility is to use a BlackX adapter from Thermaltake.

Matt: that's funny, I also had a loose screw rattling around in my last audiophile external case. Are they putting them together with robots? or was it simply the night before (or after) one of those famous Canadian holidays? ;-) Thanks for the tip about taking the drive out and installing it in the desktop case. I'm waiting for my 2011 upgrade now and I think that's what I'll do.

Jan - thanks, I want to know how so I could if I go that way. I have a FreeAgent that
I got a while back.
Andrew - I was hoping they had improved. I'm going for 2011.
