I am teaching a simple little waltz to a guitar student of mine. I would like to use the guitar track to write out a simple chordal accompaniment for her. i want the notation to show that she plucks the "A" bass string and let's it ring for the full 3 beats in the bar. Then i want to show her the little 3 note chord she will pull out of the treble strings on the other frets. BIAB will default the first sustained bass note into a 1/4 note as soon as i put in the next note.
Instead of thinking linearly or melodically i am trying to get BIAB to allow me to show the "overlapping" of notes. i can get the sound i want by going into the notation and forcing the note to play for the required amount of time. but i cannot figure out how to get the program to visually show the note.
make more sense?
is this even possible?
be well. stay warm and dry. (minus 32 outside my cabin today. but warm and toasty inside with the wood stove) RB

First, I wouldn't try to put notation that I want to keep on the Guitar track as it is one of the autoaccompaniment tracks and if you have a Style invoked it would be rewritten as soon as you hit Play or reload the song. The Melody or Soloist tracks are where we can enter notation that stays as entered and should be used for this. You can change the Melody track to be the Guitar noatation and even TAB view by using the Options in Notation View and setting it up for Guitar notation using the Track Type dropdown. Make certain that you've set that track to Multi Mode - Guitar such that each string is assigned a different MIDI channel from 11 to 16, If using BB2011, be aware of a new feature: Quote:
• Easier Entry of Guitar Notation on Notation Window. If you hold down the number keys 1-6 as you click on a note, then the note will get inserted on MIDI channels 11 to 16, which are the guitar strings from high E to low E. If you also hold down the Q key, the note gets inserted as a bend. (Note that you can also click on notes on the guitar to insert guitar notation when in editable notation mode.)
Here is how I have entered the held note on one string while chording takes place in the past:
First, I simply enter the notes using the easy mouseclick method, ignoring the fact that the held note will not be the proper duration when the next notes in the bar are entered.
After getting all the notes in the right places, I go back thru the Notation and, using the Click and select Edit window on each of the held notes, I increase the duration of that note to the desired amount using the Duration entry in the Notation Edit menu.
Its been awhile since I've had to do this, and I'm working from memory here, hopefully I haven't left anything out.

hi there Mac. thanks for the heads up about the soloist vs guitarist tracks. makes sense. and for the heads up about the guitar notation. very useful.
However, i'm still looking for the answer to my question.
i do know how to go into the "edit" mode and make the notes "sound" longer. but what i can't get is for the notes to visually show up in the proper notation duration on the printed page when i finish the song. i would like to be able to give my student a piece of paper with the music written properly.
IS there a way to make BIAB visually show (print) the notes as proper (for example) half notes as opposed to 1/4 notes which they default to.
hope there's a "yes" answer out there somewhere!
warming up a bit up here in the YT. Only -26 today. still warm and toasty in the cabin.
be well. stay warm and dry. RB

I've done it, was several versions ago. Apparently I did not remember exactly how to do it if you tried what I said to no avail. My bad, I will have to sit down with the program again and do a little experimenting to jog the memory.
There *may* still be entries on this forum as to how to do it, as well, the Search function for the forums may be able to bring that up although I couldn't figure out a good search term to find it just now.
Hang in, maybe someone else remembers exactly how and will show up, or I can get to it after work this evening or tomorrow and see if I can't do it again and then tell you.

It's never been possible in general with BB since it's just not a full fledged notation program. The only way to have overlapping notes displayed are notes on the treble staff overlapped by bass clef notes.
That's likely a design decision, which may well deserve some extension. Maybe a check box in the Notation Options such as 'Allow display of overlapping notes' might be a reasonable approach.
In the meantime you're better off resorting to one of those ubiquitous dedicated notation programs.
