Just watched a Bob Moog documentary on Netflix. (Netflix is GOOD!).

Learned a bunch of stuff many of you probably already knew.. First, that I'd been pronouncing it wrong. "Moog" is with a long "o", like robe, not moo like a cow.

He started out designing Theremins. He played one pretty well too. Not sure how old the show was, but he looked fairly old.

He talked about how some people were really outraged about synths. Lot of footage of Keith Emerson and others playing crazy stuff.

Looks like MiniMoogs go for around $2-3000 today.

I loved it when they were asking him about synths being synthetic & lifeless. (something like that)

He said he was convinced that there was a physical & emotional connection between the player & the machine. (I believe that too)

For more on that, check out "Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey". It covers quite a bit of ground on the first electronic music instrument, plenty of good interviews (more with Bob Moog, and some amusing ramblings from Brian Wilson) and is a fascinating story.

If you have the hardware to utilize the synths and such in the Apple Apps store, there is a great Moog software synth that can do alot of authentically sounding stufferoonie! Never could afford Moog hardware, but the software fare that Moog and others, attempting to lock in that "Moog Sound" is widely available. The nice thing about the Apple Apps is that they are just "pennies" and the controls and sounds emanating from an Apple Ear Bud...or a good amplifcation system is usually outstanding. I go "nuts" over some of the varied synth software available now...for less than a McDonald's Whopper with Fries!!

I have the Theremin story on DVD. They ain't cheap either, even in kits. If you're sure you'd get into it, it would be worth it. It looks like it would take a long time to get decent though.

I'd hoped to maybe find a stand-alone digital unit that works like the MiniMoog and might be cheaper but a quick Googlling didn't turn up much.

With op amps it might not be too hard to build one. Maybe when I retire.
