I was a "Beatnick" before "Beatnick" was cool...and I appreciate the fact that: "Lyrically, Waits' songs frequently present atmospheric portrayals of grotesque, often seedy characters and places – although he has also shown a penchant for more conventional ballads. He has a cult following and has influenced subsequent songwriters despite having little radio or music video support. His songs are best-known to the general public in the form of cover versions by more visible artists: "Jersey Girl", performed by Bruce Springsteen and "Downtown Train", performed by Rod Stewart. Although Waits' albums have met with mixed commercial success in his native United States, they have occasionally achieved gold album sales status in other countries. He has been nominated for a number of major music awards and has won Grammy Awards for two albums, Bone Machine and Mule Variations. In 2010, Waits was chosen to be inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011.[3][4] Waits currently lives in Sonoma County, California with his wife, Kathleen Brennan, and three children." I think Tom is a bit young to have been a "Beatnick" and never claimed to be one.
Tom's someone I followed musically from the 70s and met him in the 80s. We only spoke a couple of times but, we talked for hours. Fond memories. I remember him saying, you know I'm a married man now, but good reviews don't pay the bills. That's showbiz!

Man! That guy sings like a raspy file on glass.  But the tune is really nice. In the 60's and 70's there was a ton of protest music out there. Some good. Some lousy. I even laid out the tracks to a song my buddy wrote back in the 60's about doom and gloom because of war, etc. Those were the fun years. It's interesting how peoples attitudes and thoughts have changed from that generation, no?

You're from "what" part of NY... I'll be back in Mexico, NY in a month or two to go huntin' for anti-birthers... Our misbegotton friend who's doing the Bossa in Brazil today...ooops he had to cancel his speech to thousands in the city square...has a problem coming up with a legal birth cert...Hawaii says they have a legal one...but refuse to show it off. "This copy serves as prima facie evidence of the fact of birth in any court proceeding". Frequent arguments of those questioning Obama's eligibility are that he has not released a photocopy of his "original" or "long form" birth certificate, but rather a redacted "short form" version. It has also been claimed that the use of the term "certification of live birth" on the document means it is not equivalent to one's "birth certificate". These arguments have been debunked numerous times by media investigations,[13] every judicial forum that has addressed the matter, and Hawaiian government officials—a consensus of whom have concluded that the certificate released by the Obama campaign is indeed his official birth certificate.[14] Asked about this, Hawaiian Department of Health spokeswoman Janice Okubo stated that Hawaii "does not have a short-form or long-form certificate".[15] Moreover, the director of her Department has confirmed that the state "has Sen.
