This is done by right-clicking the track name and selecting 'port'.

Then scroll down until you see one of the empty DXi synth tracks. They are ports 17-32 I believe.
After assigning the track to that port, you assign a DXi synth to the track using the little arrow beside the track number, and in the top box selecting an available (installed) DXi or VSTi synth. If the synth isn't in the list scroll to the bottm and select 'add new DXi synth', at which point you'll be asked to browse to the .dll file for that synth (the actual sile that runs the synth)

All other tracks will then run on the default synth, but that track will send sound through a different synth. You can use up to 16 different synths if you're system is up to it.

You can also assign other tracks to that second synth by selecting that port for a given track... So there are many variations to have fun with. I did a song once just trying a bunch of different DXi/VSTi synths out at the same time .. I should try to dig that one up; it was kinda fun to listen to in the end.

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

Don't need it at all. It was good before DXi/VSTi synths were available for connecting a "standalone" synth to the program. It has other uses as well but you really don't need it at all.

What would be the best possible way to get those superior midi sounds in your opinion? The Coyote Forte DXi? or...? Forgive the elementary questions...I don't know much about this area....yet!

Ken

Ken, everybody's taste in sounds are different but a $40 piece of software sounding as good as a $2,500 keyboard? You're kidding right? I use and like the Forte DXi, it's good bang for the buck but it's not going to compare to an X8. Not even close. The only software that touches a big keyboard like that are the equally formidable and not cheap software synths like the full version Sampletank $4-600, Kontatk, Emulator X, the Garritan series etc. All those require some serious setting up skills on your part. Good sounding hardware modules are the Ketron SD2 and the Roland Sonic cell $4-600. You don't get true pro quality sounds for $50 or whatever. For that amount you do get decent workable sounds suitable for auditioning songs and styles, convenience, good enough to play around with but not good enough for final production. When you find a tune you're serious about then you switch from the Forte to either your keyboard or one of the above mentioned softsynths and get to work finding that perfect patch for each track.
