Okay, I got my midi controller hooked up to BB, and I know that it is receiving note information (they show up on the big piano window). I pressed record and my song started playing, and I played along but couldn't hear anything. On playback, though, I can hear myself flubbing around....
My manual in chapter 10 says to check the box mentioned in the post title but I can't select it....
must be another global setting or something else I missed- somebody please help!

What are you trying to use for your MIDI synth selection (MIDI/Audio... window)?
Is the "Use Dxi" box checked?
What is highlighted in the window on the RH side?
Your problem is usually something to do with those.

Mac,
Thanks! That got me up and going again. By de-selecting the "Route midi through to midi driver" check box just below the Use VST/DXi Synth box, I can now play or record on the through channel(5)as long as there is a song playing.
I adjusted the latency way down to get rid of the delay.
I found the best way to change patches is to click the DXi button and it gives you a nice menu to pick from.

You can also change patches on your keyboard by using the THHU part on the main page.
Select THRU and make sure there is a bullet in its Radio Button.
Then use the Patches dropdown to select standard GM voices, or, if you have installed a Patch Map to match your synth, then you can hit the {+} button to the right of that to select Upper Banks voices as well.
And, of course, if your keyboard has the controls for it and they can be set to Send the Patch Change, you can also switch voices on the THRU channel by using those buttons when the keyboard is connected.
