I met a musician recently who wrote a bunch of original songs years ago, and the sequences are still stored on floppy disks from her keyboard that saved the data in korg's proprietary format. She would love to save them to PC compatible MIDI files if possible... anybody know if it is? (she doesn't have the Korg anymore, and she didn't say which model it was. )

I couple years ago I found a program to do this for a Yamaha. I'll help you search for one.

Does she still have the Korg and is it in working condition?

If so, she could play back the files on the Korg while recording them as MIDI on the PC using a program like Powertracks or Realband, etc.

Save as a standard .MID file.

Pat, I have a Korg Pa1X. You could try copying the files in an email to me and I can put them on a floppy and see if my board will play them. If it does then I can convert them to a SMF. Even if a PC can't read the files I think it should at least see them so they can be used as an email attachment. PM me if you want to try it. She could also take a floppy with the files to a music store that carries Korgs to see if any of the new ones can read them.

Thanks for the excellent ideas!

She doesn't have the korg, but the local music store carries that brand. I like Macs Idea of recording from the MIDI out to the MIDI in on a PC (Did I understand that correctly?)

If it works that would probably be the shortest distance from point A to point B

Jazzmammal... if we can't accomplish something locally I may take you up on your generous offer.

Me thinks the problem will lie in trying to find a Korg that still reads floppies. At least at the local store.

If you can find any board that will play it back, I'd suggest usinge Mac's idea and actually record it to mid file.

I'd put money down that it's either a Korg O1W or a Trinity.

Yes, I meant to simply record what comes out of the 'board's MIDI port as MIDI onto a computer.

There is one caveat, though. The typical Autoaccompaniment Keyboard that uses its own accompaniment styles cannot do that. The mfrs disallow recording of MIDI from the output by not allowing the Accompaniment parts to appear at the MIDI out port, to protect their proprietary styles. However, if her sequenes are all her own input, it should work. She may have to go into the files on computer and do a bit of editing concerning certain CC's that may or may not work the same. All depends on what the original sequencer did and how it implemented it.

Good point. Note to self: "don't waste time going to the music store looking for a korg that still reads floppies"

disclaimer:
you know you're getting old when you think of 3.5 floppies as "the NEW floppies" (as opposed to the 5.25 variety)

This is from the blurb for the new Korg Pa2Xpro the new version of mine:

"The Pa2X Pro has two USB Host connections available to connect standard Pen drives, external hard drives, DVD-CD players or even a Floppy Disk."

I have no idea if the format is the same but you can try copying those files to a USB flash drive, go to a store that carries the Pa2X and see if it reads it. If those files are from a 15-20 year old Korg like a M1 or 01W probably not.

I have a Korg Karma, a Korg Triton, an M1+ and a PA-80, in which I put a hard drive...the Karma and Triton are "first editions" and take floppies.
Don't say my allegence is mispent...I also have an EPS1+ (Ensoniqe), a Yamaha Motif ES-8, and two sound modules, a Yamaha Motif, a Roland 5080+ and an Akai S-5000 Sampler/Synth, not to mention a Behringer Ultradyne 2094 24 bit unit for "finalizing the mix".

Last, but not least, I have had a Scientific-Atlanta Pacemaker/Defibrillator inserted in my left shoulder area for six years! Needless to say, when I went to the VA to check why it was going off for the first times (3X last weekend)...they checked out its data recorder and it showed in "almost" going off another 27 times...from the same problem..."tachacardia", so they have me on new medicine to forstall any more "tachy-jolts", expecially frowned upon when playing my guitars or basses!

Glad to be back...live in Cocoa now cause I wanted to stay close to the VA Clinic!
Hope to be around for my 78th, so I undergo an echo-cardiagram on the 17th, and a Thallium Stress Test the following day. I plan to surive both!!

I keep old boards (all of 'em) and this is one of the reasons. Nothing else will read that data, and I have LARGE collections of samples and songs (and whole shows) saved. They were on floppie, but I saved them to hard drives long ago to back them up. Chances of that old floppie being error free at this point in time is another consideration.

They didn't last long, even when fresh.
