After being away 2 weeks I tried to start BIAB (vr. 2011, audiophile hard drive). All I could get was a freeze that ended with Program not responding, that I had to ctrl., alt, & delet to get out of. When I try and start my RealBand copy (same location & HD) it started right up, no problem. I have never had a problem starting BIAB before. Does anyone have any ideas?? Maybe install the latest update to see if that gets it going?? All audio & midi drivers are OK>

the exectuable file is bbw.exe could it be that simple? or do you have a typo in your subject line?

No, I just posted it as BIAB. The correct file line is bbw. In my folder, on its tree, it's: Band-in-a-Box.exe , the way it came from BIAB, when I pluged their Hard Drive in. No, its worked since Dec. 2010 up until today when I tried it. What is funny, is that BIAB does not work, but Real Band, same HD location, does work. I installed the newest update, but no luck, its still not working. Next I will install (using the Setup.exe) to my internal audio drive. I did move to another USB port, but no luck there either.

Try this:
Locate a file named, "intrface.bbw" - This file contains most of the global Band-in-a-Box settings in the Opt. | Preferences dialogs, and a list of the most recently accessed song and style files.
Delete only that file. (If you want to be really safe, make a copy of it on a usb stick or your main hard drive first, then delete it from the BB folder.) Now try starting BB normally, if that is the problem, it will rebuild that critical file, which I think is likely corrupted at this point.

I thought Band-in-a-Box.exe was the install file, and BBW.exe was the program (?)
Mac's suggestion (of course) is a good one to try.
I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome Make your sound your own!

rharv - I have the BIAB external HD. File in Explore (windows XP) shows Band-in-a-box.exe, but opens as BBW.exe .
Mac- Thanks, that worked and I'm up and running. One thing, now any midi song I open, I must go through a number of BIAB message windows "your bass drum has no note assigned" , "your snare drum has no note assigned", cymbal, high hat.... But the song plays drum sounds anyway. Anyone know what is going on???

Did you try live support? I will ponder this, I've seen it before but I don't remember the details. My memory works but stuff comes to me in odd moments.

The FAST way to solve many problems you may encounter with BB is to use the FAQs page.
Ctrl-F and "Find" a keyword on the page rapidly.
In this case, I typed in, "assigned" and the second Find was this:
Quote:
102. Error message: "Your current drum kit has no bass drum note assigned".
Symptoms
You get one of the following error messages when you try to play a song:
"Warning: Your current drum kit has no bass drum note assigned".
"Warning: Your current drum kit has no snare drum note assigned".
Solution
One possiblility is that you have modified your drum kit, but you did not assign a MIDI note number to one or more of the drum sounds. Go to Opt. | Preferences | Drum Kit, and check to make sure that none of the drum sounds have been assigned to "0". For General MIDI drum kit definitions, the default note number for the Bass drums is 35, and the default note number for the Snare drums is 38. Assuming that you are not using a non-General MIDI synth, you can set the bass and snare drums to those values.
Another way to resolve the problem is to close Band-in-a-Box and delete the file MySetup.dk from your Band-in-a-Box folder (usually C:\bb). Note that this will return some settings back to factory defaults. See this FAQ topic for information on which settings are affected by this file. If you have previously modified/customized any of these settings, you should make a backup of your .dk file before deleting it.

A quick way to stop the "Warning: Your current drum kit has no bass drum note assigned" error is to:
1. Go to Opt. | MIDI/Audio Driver Setup
2. Under "Synthesizer / Sound Card" choose "General MIDI Instrument Misc." even if it is already chosen, and click OK.
3. When asked "OK to install... GENMIDI.DK file" choose "Yes".

The program that runs is bbw.exe. It is usually found at x:\bb\bbw.exe (where X is your drive letter)
The file Band-in-a-Box.exe is just a shortcut to the x:\bb\bbw.exe program.
So maybe your BB folder got renamed or something. In any event, find the bbw.exe program, and double click on that to run it.
