Hi,

Hoping someone can help me here.

When playing most jazz real styles, there seems to be a synchronisation issue between drums, bass and piano/guitar real styles on the Mac. I migrated from the PC version of BiaB which did not show this problem. My Mac is a MacBook Pro 2010 model, so should have the horsepower.

I am a jazz drummer so perhaps more sensitive to timing issues (or not as some may say ). But the instruments are consistently not all playing right on the beat - and it's much more noticeable than a natural human feel would generate. I'm playing the real styles at their intended tempos - eg 140.

Anyone else notice this? Is there some hidden setting where I need to adjust relative real track latency/delay?

Thanks,
Rich.

Hi Rich,

I am having the same problem. I have a MacBook with Intel Dual Core 2.2Ghz and 4GB RAM, with a 500GB HD. I have discovered that if I freeze the tracks, the synchronization problem disappears, but as long as the track are "unfrozen" they are slightly out of sync. I called Tech Support, and they told me they cannot duplicate the problem, and it will be 2-3 months before they can devote any resources to looking into it, since PG is in the beta testing for the 2011.5 PC release. I was advised by Tech Support to post on the Forum, and that the Forum would likely get more attention to solving this problem. A little frustrating, but I must say, I have always had nothing but the best experience with support from PG.

Have you had any luck with your situation? Do you notice the same problem on other styles than Jazz? I will check mine this evening when I get home.

I have no problem running Logic, with a heavy load of plugins on as many as 30 tracks, so I don't think it is a "power" issue. I have also tried using the internal sound card, as well as my Focusrite Saffire 6 USB Interface, and also my Focusrite VRM, all yielding the same results.

Hope we find a resolution quickly. This is a great program!

Steve

We haven't seen an issue like this, but will look into it. It would help if you had an example song that does it, since then we would know what tempo, what style etc.
Email a song to beta@pgmusic.com
Also, does it happen if you render, or only with live playback? and is it that the realtracks are synced to themselves but not to real drums?

Thanks so much, Peter!

I am emailing a song now. I hope we can find the problem here. I do want to reiterate that I have been very pleased with the level of customer support that PG Music has always provided. I'm sure this must be a rare problem. I just hope you can duplicate it.

Thanks,

Steve

Hi guys,

Sorry, been offline for a bit.

Steve - thanks for chipping in. Great tip about freezing the tracks - I get exactly the same behaviour: once frozen the tracks are in sync, but unfrozen they are not. For now I at least can live with freezing the tracks.

Peter - thanks for your support. As an example, create a new song with one chord and select real style _JSWINGP.STY. First mute the Real Drums and you'll hear that the bass and piano are nicely in sync. So no problems with Real Tracks as far as I can hear.

Then unmute the drums and mute the piano, and you should hear that the drums are ahead of the bass. This seems to be a problem between Real Drums and Real Tracks. Then I found the Slide Track setting in Real Drums prefs. A setting of -20ms seemed to help.

I also have a Mac Book Pro, with 2.4GHz Intel Core i5 and 4GB RAM.

Thanks,
Rich

Hi Steve and Rich,

I have been testing this issue on a couple of different Macs. I have not been able to reproduce the problem yet (don't worry, I am very sensitive to timing).

I am curious about the exact build version of Band-in-a-Box that you are using. Can you please find out by clicking on the Band-in-a-Box menu and clicking on "About Band-in-a-Box"?

The version that I am using is 2011 Build 26.

Another thing to consider is if you have the latest RealDrums updates. If you installed a full UltraPAK or something similar (installed Band-in-a-Box as well as all of the RealDrums) recently, you probably have the latest updates. To be sure, you can just install the full RealDrums update patch. Here is a download link:

http://www.pgmusic.com/support_macintosh_realdrums.htm#RealDrums01-29

Also, does the timing problem exist still if you render the song? (to WAV, AIFF, or M4A format)

I highlighted an issue recently with rendering files to WAV from BIAB 2011 (Build 318)WINDOWS. Someone said the problem was because I was using ASIO rather than MME for my audio driver - changed to MME, restarted BIAB and tried rendering a song - exactly the same result - the real tracks/real drums become out of synch with the midi tracks, BUT only after a tempo change bar. It's as if the real track/drums can't cope with it. Everything works fine on playback direct from BIAB, only on the rednedered WAV file is there a problem. The PC is an I5 with 4 gig RAM, should be plenty powerful enough...

Hi Blake,

I just checked - I'm also using 2011 Build 26.

When I render the song (even with unfrozen tracks), the problem goes away and timing is fine in the rendered version.

I just crossgraded a couple of weeks ago so I should have the latest Real Drums & Real Tracks patches.

BTW - I've recorded a couple of small mp3s to show the difference between frozen and unfrozen (not the best quality as I just used the onboard mics to record the speaker output). I can upload/email them if you let me know where...

Thanks,
Rich

The synchronization issue is fixed in this patch release.

If you have 2011, or 2011.5, you should update with this patch...
http://www.pgmusic.com/support_macintoshupdates.htm

The issue only happens on the newer OSX versions (Snow Leopard and Lion). So if you just upgraded your OS you'd notice the problem.

In those OSX versions, the way that m4a files got decoded changed slightly, resulting in some RealTracks being out of sync slightly with RealDrums.

The patch works on all OSX versions, so can be installed by anyone with Mac Band-in-a-Box 2011 or 2011.5
