For some reason my M. Reverb ended up linked to my Melody in some setting somewhere. When I play a tune, it ends up with a monstrous amount of reverb. When I lower the M. Rever from the default setting of 40 it decreases the melody volume until it is totally silent. Any ideas ?

I am outputting to a Ketron SD4. This does not occur when I use a VST/DXI synth.

A. Reverb, Tone, Bank0 and LSB are grayed-out and inaccessible.

PJ,
Not sure about that one, need more info. I'm assuming that this is version 2011?
I'd recommend a restart of your Ketron, and BB, maybe some wires got crossed...

If it persists, on what songs is it happening? Lots of people use the Ketron on the forum, so they may be of help.

It was happening on 2011, though I did just up to 2011.5 and it is still occurring regardless of tune. The Ketron resets to Factory every time it is unplugged or rebooted. It is really a pretty unfriendly interface, IMO. Very non-intuitive, particularly for globals like reverb. Why doesn't the music world just leave reverb off by default and let people add it if they want it. It's like having to scrape ketchup off all your food before you eat it.

I think I got it (sort of..) I moved the output from my Ketron from "headphones" to "left" (arbitrarily.) I have no clue as to why that might make a difference, but I would rather have a random inexplicable resolution than several days of intriguing potential solutions which, although intellectually stimulating, still don't fix the problem.

I'm sure it has something to do with stereo vs. mono voices etc. but since I use the Ketron pretty much exclusively for monophonic purposes (and use Real Tracks for everything else) I guess I'm OK.

Thanks, Peter

Well first off the M.Reverb IS NOT Master Reverb. It is MIDI Reverb. It controls the midi reverb of each midi track. If the melody is midi moving the slider for that tracks reverb will change the reverb. In the mixer click on reverb and then play with the sliders.

Ctrl+Alt+Q will send a "GM reset." You can also change the master reverb settings as well. I believe it is found under the GM tab of Biab at the top.

Since the only MIDI track I typically use is the Melody, they are essentially the same. As I mentioned in a previous post, this seems to be a Ketron hardware-related issue. I am not sure why the headphone-out does not just send a composite of Right and Left but it does not. Using either Right of Left channels cleans up the problem.

I'll have to dig thru the K4 manual and see what the deal is. They sure have great sounds, but beyond that support is pretty minimal. Thanks,

The SD2 headphone jack is a stereo (mini TRS) output as well.

If you insert a mono plug into the headphone jack, you will only get one channel. But the other channel output will be shorted out by the Sleeve of the mono plug.

There is really no mono output on the SD2. It should be used in stereo, at least as fas as the L and R outputs on the device should be connected to L and R outputs of your soundcard or sound device.

Then use BiaB to invoke a Mono output from there, which will mix the L and R into Mono properly.

Some certain patches in the SD2 may be using one channel for the Dry and the other for the Wet, although I haven't noticed that. But it could explain your situation. I think your problem lies in a setting in software plus the fact that you are trying to use a single mono cable where a stereo hookup to computer is needed. If you want mono then, let BiaB sort that out. This is particularly important for those patches in the Ketron that are Stereo. For example, using only one channel of the Grand Piano would mean that you are missing critical audio data for one half or the other of the keyboard.

Nothing about MIDI is intuitive. But if you work with it a little at a time, do some google searches to find out more, keep working with MIDI, eventually things do indeed start to become second-nature if not exactly intuitive. The Ketron is a State Machine. it only does what it is told to do at any given time. Not knowing what you may have inadvertently told it can be a problem.

The SD4 is considerably more complex. If the SD2 had a SINGLE BUTTON and a display to show the current patch, I would gladly go back to it, but I "upgraded" so I could take the SD4 out with my WX-7 Woodwind Controller on gigs and easily change patches (and see them on a display..at least the patch numbers.)

I appreciate all the weigh-ins, though. I may, at some point, find a keyboard hooked up to it and need to deal with stereo sounds like piano (which currently I don't). Now I just use Real Tracks for harmony instruments.

I just need to pay more attention when I hook my kit back up to my computer after a gig

I havde and use both here.

SD4 is merely TWO SD2's inside.

One of the two synths is programmed *exactly* like the SD2 and they share the same Patch set, can even run from the same Patchmap.

The other synth contains the Solo voices, 64 of which are hard written and the other 64 which are User assigable for making Custom patches such as those patches you may wish to combine two or more of the available voices as one patch. Like Piano and Strings at the same time.

While it is possible to address and use both SD4 synths inside RB and PT, with BiaB we can only assign one MIDI synth at a time, and that should be a GM compat synth, so you should be addressing only the voice that is controlled by the 'MIDIFILE' volume button on the SD4. This synth uses the exact same patch set and patchmap as the SD2. The are identical in operation.

The "User Assignable" banks in the SD4 are very cool for live playing, as you can not only layer, but also transpose multiple voices. Thus I can have a Bari, Tenor and Alto playing Root Fifth and Seventh, or a Trombone, Flugelhorn and Trumpet in Fourths. I wish it were easier to access all the cool variations with BIAB harmonies as easily as selecting higher banks from the patch dialog ...

I use that feature when playing live by programming my MIDI controller keyboard to be able to address BiaB MIDI Input at times when I want to use the MIDI harmonizer with the keyboard, but can hit one button to switch over to the "Voice" synth in the SD4 for the layered stuff. Using the USB connect frlom SD4 to the keyboard makes that rather simple to do. Of course, it can be done with MIDI cables as well. The only thing to remember is that when using the BB MIDI input, the only voices available would be those in the "MIDIFILE" sise of the SD4.

Jazz, Funk & World (Sets 468-475):
Our new jazz, funk & blues RealTracks include a groovin’ collection of RealTracks and RealDrums! These include more requested “soul jazz” RealTracks featuring artists Neil Swainson (bass), Charles Treadway (organ), Brent Mason (guitar), and Wes Little (drums). There are new “smooth jazz” styles (4), which include a RealTracks first: muted trumpet, as well as slick new smooth jazz brushes options for drums. Blues lovers will be thrilled—there are more “classic acoustic blues” styles, including guitar (5), bass (4), and drums (10) with blues master Colin Linden, featuring understated and tasty background acoustic soloing, plus brushes drums and acoustic bass. There are also new electric blues RealTracks, including electric blues with PG favorite Johnny Hiland (3) and soulful electric slide guitar from Colin Linden (4). If you love funk & gospel, there are great new options this year, including gospel organ (3) from Charles Treadway, as well as new funk, tango, and rock ’n’ roll drums (3) and bass (1). And for big, bold arrangements, we have uptempo soul horns (4) featuring a three-part hip horn section with options for a full mix or stems of each individual horn — plus an accompanying rhythm section (4) of drums, bass, guitar, and electric piano!

Rock & Pop (Sets 476–482):
Our new rock & pop RealTracks bring a powerful mix of requested favorites, fresh genres, and modern chart-inspired styles! We have more of our popular “Producer Layered Acoustic Guitars (15)” featuring Band-in-a-Box favorite Brent Mason. We’ve continued our much-requested disco styles (10), and added new Celtic guitar (5) with a more basic, accessible approach than our previous Drop-D or DADGAD offerings. There are also highly requested yacht rock styles (17), inspired by the smooth, polished soft-rock sound of the late ’70s and early ’80s — laid-back grooves, silky electric pianos, warm textures, elegant harmonic movement, and pristine production aesthetics. Fans of heavier styles will love our new glam metal (13), capturing the flashy, high-energy sound of ’80s arena-ready guitar rock. We also have a set of rootsy modern-folk rock (18), with a warm, organic sound combining contemporary folk textures and driving acoustic strumming. And we’ve added lots of new modern pop styles (16) — the kinds of sounds you’re hearing on the radio today, featuring exciting new drums, synths, and cutting-edge RealTracks arrangements.

Country, & Americana (Sets 483–488):
Our new country & Americana RealTracks deliver a rich collection of acoustic, electric, and roots-inspired styles! We have new country pop (9) with legendary guitarist Brent Mason. There is also a potpourri (14) of bouzouki, guitars, banjo, and more, perfect for adding texture and character to contemporary acoustic arrangements. We’ve added funky country guitar (5) with PG favorite Brent Mason, along with classic pedal steel styles (5) featuring steel great Doug Jernigan. There are more country songwriter styles (8) that provide intimate, rootsy foundations for storytelling and modern Americana writing. Finally, we have “background soloing” acoustic guitar (12) with Brent Mason — simpler, but still very tasty acoustic lines designed to sit beautifully behind vocals or act as a subtle standalone solo part.

Check out all the 202 new RealTracks (in sets 468-488)!
