MEMORIAL BROADCAST WKCR 24 HOURS TODAY JULY 28.... STREAM LIVE AT http://www.studentaffairs.columbia.edu/wkcr/story/frank-foster-memorial-broadcast Thursday July 28th: Saxophonist, composer, arranger and bandleader Frank Foster passed away Tuesday July 26th, at the age of 82. Born in Cincinnati in 1928, his first forays into music were on piano and clarinet before he took up saxophone. After a tour of duty in the army during the Korean War, Foster joined the Count Basie orchestra. His tenor saxophone contributions as well as arrangements and compositions for the orchestra helped define its sound from the mid 1950s through early 1960s. Notable was Foster’s composition "Shiny Stockings" which appeared on Basie’s album April in Paris and subsequently became a jazz standard. Outside of his work with the Basie orchestra, Foster performed and recorded with several other big bands including those of Woody Herman, Clark Terry and Thad Jones and Mel Lewis. Foster soon became highly regarded as a bandleader in his own right with his group The Loud Minority Big Band and eventually returned to the Basie orchestra to lead the band into the mid 1990s. Foster also did small ensemble work, notably with Elvin Jones’ Jazz Machine and his own the Non-Electric Company. Foster was named an National Endowment for the Arts Jazz Master in 2002 and continued to compose and arrange throughout his life. In memorial of his life and work WKCR will bring you the music of Frank Foster for 24 hours beginning at midnight on Thursday July 28th.

Sad news. One of the great mainstream player/composer/arrangers who could cross over to modern stuff like 'Leo Rising' which he did with the McCoy Tyner Big Band.
Leo Rising is also the name of one of his best small group sessions recorded for the Arabesque label in 1996 which shows off his powerful tenor sax and is a personal favorite.

Band-in-a-Box 2026 Video: AI Stems & Notes - split polyphonic audio into instruments and transcribe
This video demonstrates how to use the new AI-Notes feature together with the AI-Stems splitter, allowing you to select an audio file and have it separated into individual stems while transcribing each one to its own MIDI track. AI-Notes converts polyphonic audio—either full mixes or individual instruments—into MIDI that you can view in notation or play back instantly.
