Hi All
Before I start, this is my MIDI/Audio Drivers Setup:
MIDI Imput Driver: Legacy M-Audio Midi Keyboard Controller
MIDI Output Driver: MOTU 828mk3 Hybrid Audio Interface
Synthesizer/Sound Card: Cakewalk TTS-1
"Use VST/DXI Synth" box is "checked"!
"Route MIDI Thru to MIDI Driver" box is "unchecked"
(Right below this box it says):
"VST/DXI Synth Settings.....(Cakewalk TTS-1)
I also have GM2 Support selected.
Now, the propblem is if I have selected a RT Style (with say an empty track for the midi strings),
and I try to select a midi string patch (from the patch selector at the far left, right above the keyboard), the patch never sounds as it should for the selected patch.
Most of the time it just plays the same patch regardless of what I select from the "patch selector".
If someone can help me with this it would be great since I'm trying to combine midi with audio tracks to play with during live sessions.

If you are hearing it (that is the notes on the track are sounding but on the wrong instrument) you have a setting wrong, probably in your synth.
The output synth is irrelevent, once you send things through the Dxi checkbox it's going to be a softsyth solution.
Have you done a reset and tried again after a reboot. Do not play plug and play while the reboot happens, it can just mess up the usb depending on the o/s.

Could there be an embedded patch change (CC) at the beginning of your midi track which is immediatley overridding what you set to start? Use the Event Editor on that track to see if a CC exists to change the patch.

Well, an RT Style would not have any MIDI data on the empty track, or may contain muted MIDI data left over from the original MIDI Style that the RT Style was built from.
I think you would first have to use the new feature that imports the MIDI data from a MIDI style to that track, and then invoke the chosen VSTi synth on it.
Forgive if I'm not following you here, but "RT Style" as you mention it in the OP is what jumps out at me this AM.
