is there any way to use the thru instrument in 'preview' mode? ie, without the song playing enable the midi input on the thru channel to drive the patch/instrument/realtrack assigned to the thru channel?

right now it seems that the only way to make the thru channel playable is to have the song playing......

On my system I can play my controller without the song playing. I have both the 'use DXi' and 'route midi thru to default' check boxes checked (when using a soft synth). In the past I remember having to start the song first before it would play but afterwards it would play without the song running. That issue seems to have been resolved at some point but you might give it a try that and see.

I'm using the VSC DXi at the moment. I have an external synth but I want to take advantage of the new multiple VSTs so I reverted to the VSC.

Did you try what I suggested above? Start a song and play keyboard. Then stop song and see if keyboard still plays. I found I had to do that in the past but it seemed to be resolved. Maybe the issue has re-appeared?

Another thing to try. Do you see any notes appearing on the piano display when to hit keys on your controller (or whatever you are using for midi input)? If you see notes but hear no sound that might give someone a clue as to what's going on.

i did try your suggestion and there was no change (synth doesn't play)... got notes on the virtual keyboard, but no sound... I just tried the coyote WT and the NI B4II synths.... no luck. I am running on a 64 bit system.... wonder if that makes a difference...

This is kind of obvious, but if you press a key and see a corresponding key on the piano on the Band in a Box interface then the midi line into the computer is working.

So the next thing is the volume on the thru part, that needs to be up.

And the volume on your synth is sending midi so turn that up.

There is a general computer mixer window.

Make sure that is all turned up, volume wise.

Now if you can still play, and see the programs keyboard going along with the external synth, the problem is in the routing to the final synth.

There you should be able to plug in any synth and at least get noise.

Ok, so it isn't that old issue I remember re-appearing. That's good.

Now you konw it isn't your midi in since the notes appear on the virtual piano. Also good.

I'd try Johns suggestions to be thourough. However, the fact you do hear sounds after the song starts playing probably means it isn't a midi volume issue.

Here's something else to look at. Under Prefs|Midi Options try checking 'send GM Mode on at startup'. Maybe that will help. Also, is 'midi thru' checked (it should be). Is 'controllers thru' and 'use thru channel' checked (they should be).

The "Route MIDI Thru to default..." -- When it is checked, what you play on your external controller and see on the pianoboard in BB is routed NOT to the DXi synth set for default, but to the older MIDI Output that is selected at the RH side of the MIDI Output window.

If you want to hear it, try selecting the "Microsoft MIDI Synth" there.

If you want to fire one of the VSTi or DXi synths, UNcheck that setting and use ASIO sound drivers with a soundcard buffer set low enough that latency is not a problem.

Inside Band in a Box program, under the Options menu, pick "MIDI/Audio...." and in the little window that opens, look for the "Use DXi" checkbox. Right underneath it is the Route Midi Thru checkbox.

sooo. the trick was to make sure ASIO was always on... that is in the ASIO panel. once checked, you play the song once, asio initializes and you can then stop the song and the thru will play.

issue is now solved.
thanks for all the help, esp. the pgmusic guys...
