I filtered Styles using jazz waltz and turned up two Styles, JWALTZP.STY and _JWALTZG.STY.

For my money when I ask a drummer to play a jazz waltz I expect to hear something on the and of 1. What I heard here was on beat 2.

How is a jazz waltz generally defined from a drummer's point of view?

Thanks, DH

Hi Dave,

I'm not a drummer, but I've heard jazz waltzes played in a heap of different ways. I guess that like anything musical, the end result is always what sounds right for the given circumstances. I also imagine that at different periods in time, different patterns have prevailed. Below is a link to some notation for Jazz Waltzes. I'm sure if you did a search, a great deal more notation can be found.

http://www.studydrums.com/jzwalz01.html

For what it's worth, I had a look in the Realdrum Picker and the following list of Jazz Waltzes are available as Realdrums.

Since the drummers playing the above tracks are all top notch, highly respected professionals, I'd be guided by what they do.

Regards,
Noel

When I filter on Jazz Waltz, I get a lot more than just two hits and see the following list:

Which BIAB package do you have; if it is only the basic Pro version, there aren't a lot of styles there to choose from?

I should add I only considered Real Drums in my list, that will give just two Styles, the ones I mentioned. (When I remove Real from the filter, I have a very long list of Styles.)

In all the years I've been playing I expect to hear (and please realize I'm not a drummer), something on one, on the and of one, and the downbeat of three with an accent on the and of one. Just those three beats will provide a jazz waltz feeling.

I'm using the 2012 MegaPack.

Hi, Dave - You didn't mention that in your first post.

Have you tried some of the variations of RealDrums, as suggested by Noel? I haven't had a chance to listen closely, yet.

Maybe the difference is normal practice between each side of the Atlantic. Just a thought.

Dave,

No offense, but have you considered another product ? Sounds like you're just not happy with PG Music's offering to me ? Hire some guys to do exactly what you have in mind ? That's the way it's always been done prior to BIAB / Real Band.

Mitch, no offense taken. I've made my living solely from playing and playing with live musicians ... that's why I'm amazed I don't hear an accent on the and-of-one. That to me is the essence of a jazz waltz ... or maybe I've just worked with the wrong drummers.

I haven't heard jazz waltz drummers playing on the and of 1 like that.
For example, here are the first 2 that I found on youtube, and they don't do it.

(the comping instruments (guitar, piano) sometimes play on the and of 1)

I am not sure what is meant by 'something'. I have not heard the accent on the 'and of 1' as the regular rhythm, but it is a common place to place an irregular stress, say at the end of a musical phrase - sometimes more often than that. Joe Morello does it a lot with Brubeck and Dave himself is often there with his piano rhythm:

To my mind, Brubeck was the jazz Waltz King but I think that accent is more on the 'a' of 'and-a'. I suppose it depends on the jazz era with which you are familiar and it may be a dead give away on one's age.

Vale Joe Morello, one of the great jazz drummers, who died earlier this year.
