Finally Santa get me the EWI USB I wanted.
Arrived here but do not works. That is: EWI USB is an USB Device. I conect it to the USB port ant get a message like this: "Installing a Unknown Device; an error ocourred, Windows can not install the device, the device is not installed, ...." Tried 4 machines, Win Vista, XP, WIN7...
Sent the device to the vendor. Tested one machine, worked fine, tested another machine, do not work. The vendor do not know the device very well. It is the last unit in stock. Is there any trick to solve this problem? USB conflicts?

Sounds to me like Windows is searching for the driver and not able to find it. If you have a disc with the driver on it, then do a manual install of the driver and point Windows to the folder on the disc that has the driver, if you have no disc go to the manufacturer's website and see if there is a driver there to download and do a manual install with that.

Keith is right in that the EWI-USB needs drivers. If you don’’t have them you can get them here: http://www.akaipro.com/ewiusb#PS- they do work in Win 7 as that is what I have.

Thanks Yeah, you both are right, BUT EWI USB is a Class-compliant, plug-and-play USB device Then, I understand it is not necessary to have any driver. Anyway, if necessary, where is the driver? The only "file" or program that AKAI supply is the Aria Player. Mario pointed me http://www.akaipro.com/ewiusb#There is no driver there. from that link: FAQ "Aria isn’t recognizing the EWI USB. Why? EWI USB must be already connected to your computer’s USB port before your launch the Aria software. Restart Aria with EWI USB already plugged in. If EWI USB is connected to your computer through a USB hub, try connecting it directly to one of your computer’s USB ports, then close and reopen Aria." ?!#

Yeah, Don I will search the topic, that is a possible cause I not tried yet. The procedure I found at internet is a bit complicated, and includes editing Registry. That is not for me. Never did Registry editing. I suposed the EWI USB would install like a pendrive, or so. All plug´nplay USB devices (pendrive, USB HD, card reader, etc) I plug in the USB ports installs and works fine, no problem. But EWI USB is a Unknown Device... I did read Windows has a limit for the Audio or Midi Devices, maybe 10 (?), and, even they are not in use, they are there, and do not appear at the Device Manager list... Not sure about these statements, but there is something like this...

Hi Luis,
Regarding the webpage MarioD posted: Did you click on the "Docs & Downloads" link under the picture of the device?

Yes, there is no drivers there. The EWI USB come with a CD disk; it is the Aria software, no driver there.

I have one but not the usb type.
You should just check in band in a box in the input devices after you plug it it. Actually to be safe, plug it in, then start Band in a Box.
Go then to Opts...Prefs....Midi Driver and see if your device is there. If so it will play with a soft synth in the computer like the Roland VSC Dxi etc...or Coyote.
You can't just plug it in and start playing. As the others said there is software with it that contains a softsyth you are playing.
Is there a switch for midi vrs 'sound' somewhere?

Because EWI USB is NOT installed, BIAB do not see it. There is no switches for midi X sound. EWI USB is a USB controller, only, similar to a USB midi keyboard controller, with NO sounds inside it. The EWI USB cames with the bundled software Aria Player for EWI (Garritan), thet is the engine that is able to play the sounds. Well, it is possible to use the EWI to control other softwares, too, for sure. It is, as I said, a midi controller. But setting the EWI settings is done by means of the bundled Aria Software.

luiz, iirc, windows creates a limited number of usb connections and every time you plug in a thumb drive, usb drive, keyboard or similar device then windows must create a "pseudo-driver" before it can "talk" to the device. the number of such pseudo drivers is limited and, yes, clearing them requires a knowledge of registry editing. i believe that scott mentioned a free utility that would clear your registry but i don't remember the name or the link. hopefully, scott will check in on this.

Luiz, a couple of questions:
Did you install the Aria software upgrade in the docs-download section with the EWI attached? I just put the software in my new win 7 machine and all ran well. I know that the EWI configuration drivers are in the Aria software. If so did you run the EWI program and set up your configuration?
Is the EWI plugged into a USB hub? I do know mine did not work with the hub I had. I had to plug it directly into the computer.
Is it a USB2 port?
Is your OS up to date?
Have you tried a new USB cable between the EWI and your computer. I seem to recall there was a problem with some of the USB cables.
I’m not trying to be a wise guy here with some of these questions. I know I have accidentally done some of these myself! I’m trying to use the process of elimination. The more data we have the better the chance we can help you.
One last question, are you running in 64 bit or 32 bit? Be sure to run the right Aria program so it matches your computer set up. I believe you can set up both in Win 7.

Don, I didn´t found the "Rocstar_not" thread about the Windows limited number of usb connections. I mailed the vendor just now. If he send me the EWI again (we are maybe 3000 Km apart) I will take my brand new notebook with Win7 I´ve bought and did not used yet, and try installing there. For sure at that machine, Windows limited number of usb connections is not reached.
Did you install the Aria software upgrade in the docs-download section with the EWI attached? I just put the software in my new win 7 machine and all ran well. I know that the EWI configuration drivers are in the Aria software. If so did you run the EWI program and set up your configuration? Answer: No, I did not installed the Aria software upgrade; The program that comes and I instaled is the same version of the upgrade. BUT I can do that again, it is a good sugestion. Anyway, not installed with the EWI atached. Installed the SW into WinVista machine. Will try at another machine with XP and another (the brand new) with Win7. It is true I did not instaled the Aria SW at the other 3 machine I tested. I suposed the Win would reconize and install the EWI USB as a simple USB device, even with no Aria Software installed. So, my test on 4 machines is not so true.
Is the EWI plugged into a USB hub? I do know mine did not work with the hub I had. I had to plug it directly into the computer. Answer: No, but notebooks USB ports are not so root USB, not sure, they are something like Hubs... (???).
Is it a USB2 port? Supose yes. How to know for sure?
Is your OS up to date? Answer: Supose yes, but the extensive test was done at Vista machine, automatic update, but, who knows u$soft does>>>>
Have you tried a new USB cable between the EWI and your computer. I seem to recall there was a problem with some of the USB cables. Answer: YES, I´ve bought a NEW one for the test, same problem.
One last question, are you running in 64 bit or 32 bit? Be sure to run the right Aria program so it matches your computer set up. I believe you can set up both in Win 7. Answer: Runing 32 bits. As I said before, IF the vendor send me the EWI again, I´ll try the NEW win7 machine.
thanks for the interest and help, friends

Class Compliant USB
Hi Luiz,
They are not kidding about having the USB device hooked up and recognized by the Operating System *before* attempting to open any software that addresses the device.
Most softwares go through a routine that looks for available MIDI devices when the software is started.
That means that the USB device must be hooked to the computer while you are still looking at only the desktop, with NO music softwares that use MIDI open or even minimized, they must be fully closed down when attaching the device. Wait for Windows to recognize the device, sometimes difficult because there might not be a popup to tell you such after the first time. Then and only then, start the music program.
One more thing, it is always best to remember the physical USB slot where you first connected the device and always plug it into only that slot in future, or Windows may install a new instance of the driver for each physical slot. Which may not hurt anything, but sometimes can cause problems.
Keep troubleshooting the problem, with your engineering skills I'm sure you will note a clue that will expose the nature of the problem and thus the solution!
And send me a few barrels of that OIL! *grin*

If you look on the first page of docs that came with the EWI under “install the software” step #3 says “After installation of both the software and samples have successfully completed, you may open the software (No additional driver installation is needed. The computer will install all the necessary drivers automatically).” The key word there is additional. This indicates to me that the drivers are in the Akai EWI-USB software package.
I hope this helps.

Hi, Mac you said: "They are not kidding about having the USB device hooked up and recognized by the Operating System *before* attempting to open any software that addresses the device." Answer: the device IS hooked but not reconized, this is the problem...
Hi, Mario thanks, I agree with you.
Sorry for pasting part of the Manual here, but this is interesting, that is, the procedure is very simple, straightforward:
INSTALLING THE SOFTWARE 1. Insert the software DVD (included) into your computer’s CD/DVD drive. The setup window should open automatically. 2. Double-click on Setup and follow the on-screen instructions to install the software. (We recommend closing all other open applications before beginning the installation process.) 3. Once installation of both the software and samples have successfuly completed, you may open the software. (No additional driver installation is needed. The computer will install all the necessary drivers automatically.)

Hi, thanks for all repplies... We were barking the wrong tree! It was BROKEN, and I sent it to the vendor. Then, bought 2 EWIs (ouch!!!, first I've bought the new, unused 4000S, then appeared an used, like new, cheap EWI USB, not possible to resist), that is, boght an used EWI USB and a new EWI 4000S. Both work fine, as expected, easy... Now, problem is ME... The factory sounds from the EWI 4000S (internal synth) are poor (very poor in my oppinion). The sounds from the ARIA AKAI softsinth (for the EWI USB) is only fair, but is possible to load new samples... It is possible to buy a replacement set for the EWI4000S internal sounds (from Patchman), about US$ 100,00, but will not buy without try them... Maybe I´ll try a Ketron SD2, but it is very expensive here in Brazil. I would prefer that EWI4000S internal sounds were good enough. And, after all, the main problem is still ME! regards thankyou
