I have a midi track I want to record for one of my arrangements right, I want to use it as a guide to my vocal, so I'm tinkering around editing it and I can hear the note I want playing back as I edit it that way I know which note to imput, here's the problem when I have a section, I think is right on with the melody and I want to check it, I start the song...here's where it gets weird, I play it and I hear no midi, I look to see if maybe my midi track isn't enabled or something it is enabled, I can even go to notation and watch the notes go red so it recognizes them I just can't here it, if anyone can offer insight that would be great

on a side note: I am in love with this program, before if I wanted a real steel guitar on my track or mandolin (I'm a country/bluegrass guy) I would have to hire the proper musicians, with BiAB I get what I'm looking for (with some tweaking) every time, nice job PG & staff!!

When you have MIDI notes highlighted in red as the song plays but you can't hear them play:

1) Check the MIDI/Audio selection window (Options menu) and see what you have selected for the MIDI synth.

2) While there, if the synth is DXi, open it with the button down below the Use DXi heckbox and make sure its Control Panel volume control faders for all channels and the master are turned full up.

3) Check to make sure that the Vol for the track where you entered the notes is turned up high enough and that the particular trackname is not in red, indicating it is muted.

4) Make sure that the notes you have entered have a Velocity high enough to hear them, also a Duration long enough. (Use the Notation Editor to select the note and rightclick to view its properties window.

5) Don't lose sight of the fact that the only Tracks where we can enter notes and not have them change when the song is generated are the Melody or Soloist tracks. All others will get regenerated by the Style file as appropriate to the accompaniment the style creates.

Are the recorded notes on the melody track? If so, what track type have you selected? In the melody menu the top item is 'midi track type'. Try setting it to single track, otherwise you may not have a patch assigned and the appropriate midi commands. Converting to single track will eliminate this possibility by using the patch and volume settings set at the top of BiaB.

Also, check the settings in the default mixer. Open the DXi dialog (DXi button). Click the default button. Check that the volume sliders are all at the max level. The VSC DXi is known to sometimes lose the volume settings and, I believe, some other synths do this too.

If you are using sampletank or aria as your synth check you have a 'voice' or 'patch' on the correct channel. You'll get no sound if not.

Hope these ideas help.

For the situation I was describing I didn't use a midi keyboard to input I just used my mouse to input the notes and duration in the midi edit screen but could it have something to do with the fact that I do have a midi device set up I just decided not to use it that it wasn't playing back for me, on a side note: I use a notation software called Musescore maybe some of you have heard of it is it possible to transfer a melody I compose in Musescore to the melody track in band in a box because that for me would streamline the whole melody input process

If MuseScore lets you export to MIDI, do so, then import that MIDI into the melody track of BIAB. You'll find it under the Melody menu.

How do I set up my playback to Coyote? Am I correct in assuming that if I use Band in a Boxs built in interface that I will automatically hear playback?
