For several years I had been happily writing and recording my songs using BIAB with Computer on XP. I could record the melodies to BIAB or Real Band with no problems using Asio Drivers to take care of the latency problem.

Since switching to Win 7 (Professional edition) Computing platform, I have had multiple problems with recording from an external synth to BIAB because Win 7 latches onto the control of Audio input and output and won't release them for use as they did in XP. I'm sure others have had this problem too and we sure do need to find a solution. First issue was the latency which was solved by installing ASIO drivers but then when I tried again, I could get no sound from BIAB. Was wondering if anyone has used the Virtual Audio Cables and found them to be a suitable solution to the problem. If they are it would be an inexpensive answer to a sticky problem.

I'm not a real tech savvy person and had a hard time grasping all the details about the VAC but thought perhaps some of you folks that are a little more experienced with computers might tell me what I need to know.

Visit MIDI/Audio in the Options menu, hit the Audio Settings button and make sure that you have "ASIO always On" checked.

Now, onve you do that, BB should retain the ASIO driver.

Caveat is that you likely cannot use ASIO drivers in any other open audio program at the same time as BiaB.

Thanks Mac, Yes, I tried this with "ASIO always on". No sound from BIAB at all. The playback will take place as it should only with MS wavetable set in my midi settings but I cannot record any melodies there because of the latency issue. Thought maybe the VAC mentioned above might take care of this problem but wondered if anyone else had tried it.

What soundcard and drivers?
MIDI device driver (MSWavetable or MIDIMapper) is different than the audio device. Have you looked at the audio output selection?

I do not work here, but the benefits are still awesome

rharv,
My system has Realtek soundcard, Don'[t know about drivers...whatever the system came with..it's HP Compaq Pressario running Win7 Professional, about a year old now. It is supposed to update drivers automatically so they should be current. I have opened the Realtek screen but don't understand what I need to do to release the sound output to make it available to BIAB with ASIO enabled. My first thought was to use my laptop w/XP for recording and then transfer the file to my BIAB in Win 7, however my old laptop w/XP just died so all I am left with is Win7 and must find a way to make it work. I had tried the virtual XP download on Win 7 but that didn't do the job as it's still going through the WIN7 system controls. So...that is where I'm at. Any more suggestions? I am going to go to the Realtek site and see what they have to say about how to do this. Will post what I find.

I've pretty much come to the conclusion that there is no way I am going to get ASIO support on my present soundcard (Realtek) and no way I can record melodies without it, so am thinking perhaps I should install a second sound card in my computer's expansion bay and make it a dedicated card. Have been looking at Sound Blaster Audigy and it looks like the least expensive option available to me for what I want to do. Has anyone else done this? If so, has this been a satisfactory move allowing you to record using Keyboard controller or Midi keyboard with ASIO4All?

It was suggested in another thread that I try routing the keyboard and BIAB output thru my Behringer mixer and then back into BIAB, which I did try but the sound was unacceptable so I gave up on that idea. It did eliminate the latency problem but the sound was not good.

Hi,

I don't have Windows 7 professional edition but, from reading these forums, I believe that it's possible to force a program (say BIAB) to run in XP mode (or something). From memory (and I may be wrong), I think read about this in posts from MarioD and Matt Finley. If they don't see this post, it might be worth sending them a private message.

Also, it might be worthwhile sending Support and email, include the URL of this thread, and ask them for their advice.

Good luck!
Noel

I think you are referring to the Virtual XP which I have already downloaded and tried but it didn't work for me to use.
After several attempts to get things up and running on virtual XP. I gave up on it and uninstalled it. I had the same problem there with the soundcard on the system not being able to use ASIO. Thanks for your response though. I appreciate all suggestions.
