I've been working on a silly little medley which involves faux barbershop quartet. Everything works, everything renders fine... but the preview did not work. Or at least it didn't play any sound. It should work with ASIO, right? I is confuzzled and has a sad.

Tom,
My recollection is that Preview only plays the first couple of bars of music. Is it possible there was no audio sound in the first part of the song (say it was playing an intro or something)?

I wish, Noel. In the past, it's only played the first couple of bars of the harmony. No matter where the vocals begin in the song. What I'm getting is a slight system lock up (the one where the top of the window says, "Not Responding") and then that clears and that's that.

Do you have "ASIO Always On" checked in the ASIO settings?

Tom,
I do not fully understand what you mean by "In the past, it's only played the first couple of bars of the harmony." How does it generate the harmony if there's no vocal line since it works by pitch-shifting the audio track? That being said, these days I prefer to use TCH in Realband. It might be worth trying it there.

Mm. Maybe, Noel, although as I said it did successfully generate the harmonies, just not generating the preview.
What I mean is, when I've used TC Helicon in the past, the preview has started with the first part of the audio track that actually had sound on it, i.e., me singing.
Which, when you think about it, has to be the way it works -- otherwise, any song that didn't have the vocal start immediately at the beginning would at the very least have some dead air in the preview.

Hello Tom,
Actually, I don't think the preview can use ASIO, and instead uses your default Windows sound device. You should be able to hear it if you can hear Windows Media Player.

Got it, Andrew, thanks. The problem is that ASIO takes over the system and nukes any other simultaneous sound -- for instance, nothing out of my browser (YouTube, etc.), no game noise if I'm swapping back and forth between programs... basically, everything plays nice together except if ASIO is running, and then only the first ASIO program will have sound.
Pain in the tuchus, actually. I'm having enough trouble with it that I'm thinking of unearthing one of my older sound cards that had trouble with Win7/64 and just pounding at it until it works properly. Stupid Creative technology.

Hey Tom,
Try unchecking ASIO Always On to let it be released to another program.
Does not work with all ASIO drivers, so...
