I use Audacity for Clipping from and tail ends. Fadein/out, and primarily mp3 export/quality settings. Also the mp3 and now wav file Meta data inputs.
The VST's etc, are gravy for folks who don't have RB, Cubase, or other nice tools like that.
Purchased PT about 2005 time frame, not sure of exact date. Used it a lot for MIDI modifications and also building couple hundred Multi Pads for Yamaha keyboards.
I inherited Cubase 5 LE with my Alesis USB 12 mixer. Spent a few hours with it and took note it is extremely powerful, but being more familiar with PT, then having RB concentrated on posting and answers by you folks.
RB is compatible directly and fits into the BIAB PG scheme so it seems a good fit.
hope this post takes. not sure what I'm doing wrong.

Frank, I use Audacity in exactly the same way with one extra way (the single most important to me) - to pitch shift a finished track into the right key for my voice.

Real Band can also pitch shift a song, and it uses the Elastique engine which probably yields better results than Audacity (unless Audacity uses it too... haven't looked at the list of licensees lately)

If you don't like the GUI, or the process flow, or whatever, that one recording/sequencing software has, then use something you do like.
It is not like we are low on alternative options...

While there are other low cost alternatives, I think a lot of folks here like to use Audacity simply to convert from WAV to MP3. RB and PTPA only use Windows internal CODECs, but Audacity lets you specify an external CODEC (such as LAME).

Frankly, I use it because it's FREE as well as the fact that it's open source - continually being improved by users.

Ability to use LAME is one of my favorite features. I like the fact that you can set up a variety of different MP3 quality settings, and they show up in the menu!

Regarding John Ford, Don "the hoser" Gaynor, and Pat Marr- I believe this is the principal strength of that Audacity "package" - a very complete selection of open-source software constantly upgraded by users; all of whom are musicians. Including the FLAC codec - http://flac.sourceforge.net/ - which will encode lossless compression at up to 24 bits. (be sure you have dithering turned off when using FLAC in Audacity, or the files will not be bit-for-bit identical)

Haven't install it yet but looks like it still can't use ASIO unless you recompile the source. I understand why they do it, but ASIO4ALL would be great.

I didn't realize you couldn't point to external codecs for .mp3 encoding from within PG products. That is kind of 'LAME'!
As for trimming, fades, etc. - this capability is inside PG products.

For some things, Audacity can often be quicker and easier than RB but I love my RB for many other things I wouldn't even think about doing with Audacity. Just saying...
