Are any of you using VoiceWorks or VoiceWorksPlus?

Ijust purchased a VoiceWorksPlus rack unit to add harmonies and voice modelling. I have it hooked up and working but I have a couple of questions that maybe some of you can answer.

First, I can send chords to the VWP unit when I'm using a hardware synth but is there any way to do so when using a soft synth such as the VSC DXi? There doesn't seem to be but maybe I'm missing something.

Second, what is the VSTi version of the supplied software supposed to do? Clearly it can't do any vocal processing to the assigned track. I've seen statements online that indicate it is supposed to change parameters etc. under midi control. If true that would be a cool way to automate the application of harmonies in a song. But does it also allow you to send midi notes to the unit so you can do pitch correction etc. in real time?

Any tips, suggestions or insights would be welcome.

Thanks,
Paul

You can get chords to the VW and VW+ simply by sending MIDI notes from a track in your sequencer over a MIDI channel to the harmonizers. If you are just wanting to send chords, one way to get them into the track is to use the feature in BIAB that puts chords on one track when you make a MIDI file for export. Take that MIDI track, put it into your sequencer, set your harmonizer to chords (or even better have your sequencer select one of the patches the useses chords) and the harmonizer will follow along with the chords in the song.

If you use the harmony mode that exactly follows the notes in a track you can set up four consecutive midi channels on 4 tracks to send the exact notes to the harmonizer for it to use in up to a four part harmony.

Myself, I use the midi controller and set them in the sequencer to send the chord changes, telling the harmonizer what I want rather than have it figure it out on its own from the chords. That works better for me. Using controller messages in the sequencer, you can control everything: number of voices, volume, effects, and on and on.

The vst plug that is available for the harmonizers is little more than an interface to put up on the computer that duplicates some of the knobs on the VW. All it really does for you is it lets you make setting on the computer that you would make on the front of the harmonizer. It isn't going to do anything in the way of automation for you. To do that, you will have to set controllers in your sequencer. I usually do most of this in the Piano Roll View of Sonar.

Keith,
He wants to do this with BIAB. BIAB will not let you use a VSTi AND the Midi port except the THRU Channel. We hashed this one over a couple times.

What I thought it might do as a VSTi loaded in the first slot of say, the melody track, was take the midi data (notes and cc's etc.) and re-transmit it to the midi port that VW+ is set to recieve on. After all, it knows the port and channel number. That way it'd work as a realtime pitch correction and harmonizer.

I gather from the comments that it won't do that which is a shame. And it begs the question 'why not'? I don't think BiaB would prevent that.

Anyway, thanks for the comments.

Warren,

Out beloved Band in a Box can still only address ONE MIDI output port at a time.

So you could change the channel assignment, but it would still be headed to the chosen output port, such as the DXi.

You could use the VW with a hardware synth, though, by daisy chaining it after the synth and then going into the menus of the devices, disable that channel on the hardware MIDI SYNTH and enable that channel on the VW.

There also may be ways to use software MIDI cable or yoke to run the DXi synth plus the VW, as well.

Yea you could use MidiYoke as the output driver into MidiOx out to Cantabile that is a great VST/VSTi host.Let's you daisy chain all sorts of VSTi & VST effects into a rack. And MidiOx also out to you midi interface that would go to the VW. MidiOx will let you filter as well. I used to do this ages ago. It works but to me for live is cumbersome.

Yeah, I realize that Mac. However, I was refering to the VW VSTi not BiaB. If the VW VSTi recieved midi data from BiaB it should be able to re-transmit that data to the hardware port and selected channel which the VW is connected to independantly of BiaB.

Unfortunately, as I understand it now after more reseach, the VW VSTi doesn't recieve any midi data. It seems to be nothing more than an interface to the VW hardware. So I can't do what I hoped that way.

This suggestion, from you and others, might work. I'll give that a try one day.

Thanks.

the simplest approach is to use the external voiceworks only with songs that have realtracks and no midi... that way the midi port can be used for an external device. You can send notes, chords, patch changes etc
