Supertracks are simply live MIDI played by good players - worth having but no marvelous feat of technology. Any Sequencer can do this. Although I believe the upgrade is always worth it because of the real tracks and beacuse of the pricing structure, there is not much else in this upgrade, which leads me to think that PG are working on a new fully rewritten 64 bit/32 version for 2013. There are still lots of very obvious things that need rewrite - I could make a long list - so I am getting very positive that PG are spending their development time on a completly new version.
Just putting the thought out there...

Hi Zerozero,
I understand what you're saying but I think there is a little more to the Supertracks than there immediately seems to be.
As I understand it, what PG Music have done in 2012.5 is to take MIDI recordings made by studio musicians and then to use automated slicing and splicing techniques (comparable to what is done with Realtracks) for the creating of backing tracks from an entered chord progression. This is not possible when using a standard MIDI file with BIAB; nor is it the same effect that is achieved when using BIAB to create a style from a given MIDI file.
I upgraded to 2012.5 and my ears tell me that this new technique that PG Music call "Supertracks" is quite different from anything that's been done before. I've been impressed by what I hear!
Kind regards, Noel

Fair point Noel, what is (easily) possible in a standard sequencer is to record in live MIDI, cut it up into bars, change its key, move it around, etc.
My main point is I think/guess there is a rewrite underway

If so, I hope they do away with the restrictive 8.3 style name system.
Best bet would be a 64 bit version having the ability to use multi-core processors. Now that would speed up the regeneration of the tracks. Oh, and the 8.3 style naming system.
We can only hope.

What 8.3 naming restriction? I have long BIAB titles everywhere.

...Any Sequencer can do this...
Any Sequencer" can NOT do what Band in a Box does.
All the Sequencer can do is play back the original recording, in order.
Band in a Box MIDI Supertracks work a lot differently than that, just as with the RealTracks, they allow the user to assign the chords bar-by-bar and then Band in a Box assembles a performance based on that plus a few other parameters. And that performance can differ with each regeneration (hit Play) of the songfile.
Hardly a static sequencer.
You are jumping o conclucsions based upon assumptions here.

Stylefile names are still at 8.3 convention, but for good reason. Peter has stated in the past that keeping the stylenames at that length keeps Band in a Box styles compatible for all those people around the world who may have to run older versions of the program.
The songfile names were changed to provide support for LONG FILENAMES quite some time ago, though.

I agree that the MIDI Supertracks are very different from the linear playback of a sequencer, but I am not sure that anything significantly new has been introduced. Isn't this the same concept or "engine" behind the soloist? Specifically, isn't this what was done several years ago when the premium soloist disks 12-15 were introduced featuring the solo phrasing of Jeff Lorber and Andy Laverne? Whatever it is, I really appreciate any attention paid to improving the MIDI capabilities.

Just for the record I am not stating that any sequencer can do what band in the box does with MIDI. Cubase (my pref sequencer) can cut up and rearrange a MIDI performance (on a MIDI instrument) then rearrange it, note by note, bar by bar, section by section. It can change its key, move notes, show them in notation - print the notation individually or in gruops, repeat bars, lengthen notes, shorten them, assign them to different VST instruments, change the clef, it can change a single note to a [particular articulation (e.g. marcato strings), it can apply swing or other quantize, or effects to MIDI - either MIDI fx or Audio, it can convert a monophonic Audio performance to MIDi (a la melodyne) and back and a lot more besides - but it is NOT BIAB.
It cannot give you a fully fledged performance in high and authetic quality as BAIB does - in minutes. Nor does it have a library of songs at the push of a button. BIAB is excellent at this.

I think that far too many people see "MIDI" and bring preconceptions to the thing based on their own experiences, which, apparently, aren't all that deep.
If you've recently been to the movie theater, chances are very good that you heard MIDI instruments in the Soundtrack or Underscore, emulating orchestras and quite a few other sounds.
A MIDI track can be recorded just as any audio track can.
If you are playing a good sounding and good reacting MIDI instrument, that performance can be captured exactly.
With certain Patches, such as Piano, with a good MIDI synth, it can be difficult to impossible to listen to the resulting recorded track and tell it apart from a well-recorded MIDI piano performance.
The MIDI SuperTracks are live performance MIDI recordings that are handled in much the same fashion as the Audio based RealTracks are. Phrases, not single notes, intelligently incorporated into your chord changes.
