After watching the "editing MIDI super tracks" part of the 2012.5 video, I am having a blast trying out other instruments with the piano and pad Super styles as well as editing the notation to create more of what I hear or feel in a particular measure. In combination with the real tracks it has really open the door to creativity for me.

As someone who always exports the tracks to a DAW I have always wished we could have more control over the real-drum track mixes. I hope in the future that they are planning Real Drum MIDI super tracks as well.

Thanks

"Live Drums" were introduced eons ago. These are MIDI styles that include a Drum part that was played in by a live drummer using MIDI drums.

I think what he is asking for is to have new MIDI drum pattern (SuperDrums?) that can run through the new MIDI engine, allowing phrases of up to 8 bars long, like the new MIDI SuperTracks do (and like RealTracks and RealDrums do), rather than randomly selecting single bar phrases (albeit recorded live) and tying them together across those same 8 measures.

I think this would be a nice addition, as well.

Yes
Perhaps even matching the RealDrums. This would allow for separating the drums onto separate tracks in the DAW, fine tuning "RealDrum like breaks, and mixing as needed.

I would not be surprised if the idea was already on the drawing board.

Anyway even more so than the dry guitar tracks introduces in 2012, MIDI super tracks just increased our options greatly.

I also think this would be great way forward. It would bring huge flexibility and with great VST software available nowadays like Toontrack Superior Drums or XLM Addictive Drums they would sound fantastic. This would also offer the opportunity to have separate tracks for each drum instrument and also through MIDI allow simple editing of the drum parts such as adding or removing cymbal crashes and editing velocities.

I am also sure the PG Music team has this as a development plan.

In my own styles, I already use 8 bars long MIDI Drums. What do you really mean ?

Although this would be nice I would like to see PGMusic spend their time and money developing Supertracks on other instruments. Why? Because what is being asked for is already available from other companies like Groove Monkee, http://www.groovemonkee.com/en/products , Toontracks, http://www.toontrack.com/products.asp#MIDI and others.

Just my thoughts.

Yes I have 1000 of loops and even use Jamstix that can generate drum patterns and detect over all dynamic, but it is a matter of convenience. Realdrums sound great but you can't control them much and since BIAB already knows the progression it can automatically generate the song parts (fills, intros, verses's, chorus's, bridges etc) for you (perhaps even using Grove Monkey patterns).

It was just a suggestion, and I too would like to see other musicians simulated like orchestra sections, horn sections, Latin percussion etc)

I have been play with the "force MIDI drums" instead of the RD for styles, but I am seeing simple straight drum patters that are 100% quantized when I export them into a DAW.

Am I doing something wrong to get the "Real Drummer played MIDI patterns that Mac was mentioning?

"Live Drums" is the correct nomenclature, at least, that is what PGMusic named them.

Note that a User can also create their own Live Drum patterns and import into the Stylemaker, as well.

From the Band in a Box FAQ page:

Quote:

105. In the StyleMaker, what is the difference between a drum grid pattern and a live drum pattern?

There are two types of drum patterns - (1) patterns that you input into the drum grid editor, and (2) "live" drum patterns that are imported from MIDI files, usually after having been recorded using an external synth/drum machine.

Many of the newer Band-in-a-Box styles use live drum patterns, which are identified in the main StyleMaker window with a red outline around the pattern. To edit an existing live drum pattern, select the pattern and click on the Notation button to open the StyleMaker Pattern Editor. You will notice that each different MIDI note is for a different drum sound. Live drum patterns cannot be edited using the drum grid editor.

To record a new live drum pattern, you must first record the drums outside the StyleMaker. You can use either Band-in-a-Box or a MIDI sequencer such as PowerTracks Pro Audio. Save the recording as a MIDI file, then use the Pattern | Import Pattern from MIDI file command to import it into the StyleMaker.

Note that by default all drum patterns are 4 beat (1 bar) patterns but you can specify any live drum pattern to be an 8 beat (2 bar) pattern by checking the "2 bar pattern OK" box in the Pattern Options dialog.

Thanks Mac
I messed around with it for about an hour yesterday, and all I can say is "Kudos for MIDI Super Tracks" and where they may lead.

On another note I was surprised to see that piano super tracks don't export with any sustain pedal data. I am not a piano player but I would think it could base it on chord changes? I overdubbed the pedal data in my DAW and the track sounds great now.

I'll have to dig into it here and see about the sustain cc's -- I would want them to stay with the exported MIDI track or file, certainly, especially since they were placed there by a live pianist in the first place.

If it can be duplicated by others, perhaps this is another bug...

This depends on which SuperTrack you use. For example, if I use the piano from the demo file with the M_TRAINJ style, there are no pedal controls at all, either in BIAB or if I bring it into RealBand.

However, if I select the demo file from the M_CPPBSA style, then I can see the pedal controls using the MIDI monitor in BIAB, and if I bring it into RealBand (whether by saving as MIDI first or by dragging and dropping).
